Frank,
I'd like to see those pictures. Would love to have a knowledge of the inner
workings of the boat. As far as I know the keel has never been removed on
my boat so your statements below are a little concerning. Especially that
"rocking keel" statement. With an object that weighs in at 4000 lbs it
wouldn't take much rocking for it to rip off the boat.
Thanks,
Frank Albert

John,
As I write I am waiting for a call from a local boat yard as to when they
can start work on my keel. I hit a mooring block last year and incurred a
crack in the hull forward of the keel, and also bent the keel to port by
about five degrees. The keel envelope will have to be removed, the keel
dropped, the keel goes to Mars Metal for repair, and the teak stringer that
runs along the center line from the bow to the main bulkhead has to be
replaced.
The bill for the interior part of the work which in effect is replacing the
stringer comes to $4575.00 (without tip!). It sounds like your yard is
doing it cheaply, although the yard I'm using in Chicago is one of the
more, if not the most expensive around. But they're also reputed to be the
best in the city.
Fortunately my insurance company is paying for the repair, which in total
comes to just shy or $20,000, and then the Chicago Park District will be
having a serious discussion with State Farms' lawyers about their placement
of mooring blocks in channels.
I'm planning on taking some pictures just in case any of you want to see
what the inside of your keel structure looks like. In talking with one of
the guys at Crowleys, who is related to Jim Anderson, the former GM at
Carroll Marine when they built these boats, they all suffer from what they
euphemistically call "rocking keel syndrome". He said that if your keel
hasn't been fixed on the 33, its only a matter of time and that I was lucky
to hit the mooring block and have my insurance and/or the park district pay
for the job.
Let me know if you have any other questions
