Art is correct..I came through Cape May when I first bought my boat and
the height was 53 feet.. We did not have a large amount of space, so 50
is pushing it. One other note, as you can see from my race results..I
cannot seem to make a large bow wave which as Art pointed out might have
helped also, however this year that might change. - John Ricci - (the
faster) ALMA (this year)

Subject: Re: [frers-list]Bridge Clearance
Tough call there Steve. I haven't actually measured the mast (but I'll
try once I figure out where the yard hid it this year), but I assume it
to be about 50' tip to tip. The mast step is probably a couple of
inches below the water line.
Technically speaking the "I", which is measured from the top of the jib
halyard sheave (roughly top of mast) to a line parallel to the water at
the sheer alongside the mast, is 45'. Now measure the height of the
shear (or toerail) above the waterline at the mast, add 45' to that, and
add in Windex, VHF antenna, bird repellants, etc. and you should end up
with the bridge clearance.
Either way, on a good day, you'll be scraping paint off the bridge, on a
bad day kiss that Windex and maybe the anchor light goodbye. Perhaps
you can order a custom mast of the height you need.
Hall Spars is the stock provider and should be able to guide you. Maybe
you can get a telescoping mast? Take on extra water and fuel, and pump
the holding tank full while carrying a crew of 20? Or if you go under
really fast the boat may sink a few inches in it's own bow wave.....
Good luck,
Art

Can anybody tell me what the clearance is? I am ordering a mast and
need to know if I have to get it shortened for clearance under the
Destin bridge wich is a very short 50 feet.
