This was well said Art. For my part, Kathy and I were excited when Kurt
revived the class in 2001 by, among other things, re-establishing the
Nationals in Newport.

I saw it as an opportunity to test ourselves in a one-design setting. The
fact is that if you have a Frers 33 and race it, most/all of your racing is
PHRF. The vagaries of handicap racing make it impossible to know if you are
really making the boat go as fast as it can or should. One-design racing is
great, but the relatively small number of Frers 33s built and the distance
between them all make regular one-design events difficult to arrange.

The Nationals give us a (somewhat) central place for most of the Frers
owners to meet and the venue is one of the best anywhere. It is a beautiful,
historic place and there is always wind. Equally important, the Sail Newport
organization runs a true first class regatta. You simply will not have more
well-run racing anywhere-period! Added to what Art has said about the
benefits to crew enthusiasm, growth and morale, all of these things make the
Nationals a must-attend event for any Frers 33 owners who race their boats.

If you haven't made the trip before, think seriously about adding it to your
schedule. Regardless of your current level of racing experience, doing the
Nationals in Newport is fun both on the water and ashore. As the focal point
of our season, it has helped us develop a better sailing program than would
have been possible otherwise and has provided some of our best sailing
memories.

I didn't see a lot of positive responses to Kurt's query about who is coming
to Newport this year. If you are on the fence, let me give you my
perspective.

We have only participated twice now, because we've only had the boat 3
seasons. I went up there the first year with a green crew and no
expectations of doing well. I got lucky and picked up a couple of people
form other Frers 33's to supplement my regulars. We had a blast! We even
beat one boat overall. The turnaround in the crew was amazing.

At home sailing PHRF, we tend to get a bit lazy at times and the competition
is just not as intense since you can make all kinds of excuses for another
boat beating you. In this one-design event everyone stepped up his/her game
plan two notches. By the time we got home, the team was really psyched and
our subsequent results showed it..

We had the same response this year. About half of the crew had been with us
the year before, there were a couple of "greenies" and 2 folks from other
boats - one Frers and one not. I now have one really pumped up crew. We
have a dozen people wanting to come along and that's without bringing in
"special players". (Matt - you're a regular now, not a ringer!).

This event is my single biggest crew builder. People love the venue - and
the word gets out about that. They love the intense racing and the
opportunity to race against really good sailors in the same boats. We had
the same finish at Nationals last year as the year before - we beat one
boat, but when you look at the progress we've made in other events, it's
priceless.

If you're thinking "we're not good enough", stop worrying. This is the best
way to get better. These three days are worth a whole season of PHRF -
maybe more. Besides, we have our own little race at the back of the fleet
that's as intense as the group at the front.

This event requires more logistics than most, that's true. But don't you
owe it to your crew and yourself to mix it up with the "other" guys? When
else does the LIS group get to tangle with the MA group?

To the LIS group I'll offer that if we can agree on a transport schedule,
we'll happily travel flotilla style so we can keep each other awake
overnight via radio. To the MA teams I'll just say - we'll race you to
Zelda's!

I hope to see may of you out there this year!
