That's the easy part... when the boat is out of the water, if you can 
move the bottom of the rudder from side to side, your bearings are 
worn... If in the water and it feels  like the rudder doesn't respond 
well to the steering input ("feels sloppy") the bearings may be worn. 
After 20 years of salt water, I would guess all Harken rudder bearings 
need help because the salt and Torlon balls chew up the aluminum bearing 
races.
