Hi Rod,

On Long Island Sound, I carry three headsails (North 3DL) including a Light/Medium 155% #1, a 145% #2 (almost like a heavy #1) and a 100% #3. The #2 is used in the 16-18kts True range, but can go higher/lower depending on the conditions and crew weight.

We usually have two North spinnakers aboard, both AP runners. One is a .75oz for heavy air and tight reaches with True wind of 16+kts, especially if it's puffy or waves are likley to cause the occasional popping of the chute as it re-fills. The chute we use most of the time is either a 0.5oz or a 0.6oz (the newer is the 0.6 and we use that in the more important races).

Some people do not carry a #2 and just go from a heavy #1 to their #3. since I can carry the L/M #1 to 15kts True, I don't have a normal heavy #1 and I find the 145% #2 is a perfect size for that middle range just above 15.

Sometimes staying with a heavy #1 and reefing the main works well in the middle range also, so if you are building an inventory I would focus on getting the #1 and 0.5/0.6oz sorted first and add the #2 last.

I'd also be interested to hear what others have found works for them.

Regards,

Dave Nauber

Rod,

The 33 is a fairly tender boat so in winds up to about 11 or 13 knots I go with a 155% genoa.  In 11 to 19 knots I use a 140% genoa and the one I have is a very well cut sail so it drives us well even in the lower winds of 11 to 13 knots.  In the stronger winds it drives us very well and helps to keep the boat flater.  For the really heavy stuff of 20 knots and over I use a little 95% jib with battens.   For the spinnaker I use a .6 Airx all purpose which drives us very well.

Good luck.
