I seem to recall years ago a pretty elaborate write up of a mas=
t step repair complete with photos, and I'm pretty sure in was either on&nb=
sp;our website or on this discussion board. But I can't find it now. =
From Bob Ames' description below of their fix on Windswept 3, I wonde=
r if it was his writeup. If it was, and he still has the photos, it'd=
be something worth posting on our website.

A weak mast step appears to=
be a common problem with the 33's....Carroll
Marine did not do a good j=
ob with constructing this area.
Our solution with #33 ( Windswept 3) was=
to peel off the top skin of the
step from the forward bunk bulkhead all=
the way to the bilge sump, remove
the soggy plywood that was supposed t=
o be the structural filler, and replace
it with high density foam set on=
edge.
Any voids were filled with filled resin and glass strands. That w=
hole length
of that box became one stiff unitized structural beam.
A =
new fiberglass top skin was laid, faired, and painted so it looked
origi=
nal.
While we were at it, woven roving was bonded to the shower sump and=
the
under-sink sump.
There was a major improvement in supporting the=
mast load and keeping the
rig taught, and it's impervious to water
seepage / rot for as long as the
boat lasts.

Gentlemen,=20
I took out my mast step a few years back. The symptom that led me to that d=
ecision was that while lying on the side deck on one of those rare occasion=
s that we were cruising, I noticed that in a 1 foot chop, the portion=20
of the mast above the top spreader was pumping with the waves. This in a 10=
kt wind. At the end of the season I drilled into the mast step and came ou=
t with wet wood. It seems CM had installed a longitudinal stiffener from th=
e bow to the end of the mast step. As water came in through the inside of t=
he mast it eventually migrated through the plastic covering of the step, pr=
obably through the bolts, and had been sucked up into the wood.=20
I removed the top layer of the mast step, keeping the plastic for later re =
installation , and drilled out the stwood as far forward as the beginning o=
f the head door. The rest of teh area seemed reasonably dry. I was lucky as=
the brother in law of one of the managers at Caroll Marine, worked for a l=
ocal boat store and after discussing the problem I was advised to use a pro=
duct called " penske board" which I had to buy in a buld 8x12 bul sheet, 1"=
thick. I believe I got it from CM at the time for about $350.00. I cut the=
board into layers and using an epoxy/fiberglass slurry, fitted these 1" bo=
ard into the void I had created above the keel. There is a product the Defe=
nder sells which is small fiberglass chips and you buy it by the pound . It=
mixed will with the epoxy to fill gaps and add strength. I then epoxied th=
e original plastic cover over the repair. As a part of my suspenders and be=
lt approach, I found a stainless steel plate which I had cut to the width o=
f the area of the mast step and long enough to g o from the back of the mas=
t step all the way forward to the beginning of the head door, laid that dow=
n above the repair and then placed the mast boot over that and tightened th=
e keel bolts . The SS plate served to spread the weight of the mast over a =
longer area.=20
One more thing. Carefully inspect the butt late for the mast . if the mast =
has been flexing up and down, the plate may have tiny cracks in it from fle=
xing. I took mine to a local welder and he repaired the cracks.=C2=A0=20
The repair worked well, the mast stopped pumping and years later when I eve=
ntually had to have the keel root worked on, the yard fiberglass guys compl=
imented me on the repair.=20
Any one who has questions regarding the above can email me at fwitt1@comcas=
t.net =C2=A0=20

A weak mast step appears to be a common problem with the 33's....Carroll=20
Marine did not do a good job with constructing this area.=20
Our solution with #33 ( Windswept 3) was to peel off the top skin of the=20
step from the forward bunk bulkhead all the way to the bilge sump, remove=
=20
the soggy plywood that was supposed to be the structural filler, and replac=
e=20
it with high density foam set on edge.=20
Any voids were filled with filled resin and glass strands. That whole lengt=
h=20
of that box became one stiff unitized structural beam.=20
A new fiberglass top skin was laid, faired , and painted so it looked=20
original.=20
While we were at it, woven roving was bonded to the shower sump and the=20
under-sink sump.=20
There was a major improvement in supporting the mast load and keeping the=
=20
rig taught, and it's impervious to water seepage / rot for as long as the=
=20
boat lasts.=20

div style=3D'font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; color: #000000'>Gentle=
men,
I took out my mast step a few years back. The symptom that led me to tha=
t decision was that while lying on the side deck on one of those rare occas=
ions that we were cruising, I noticed that in a 1 foot chop, the portion
of the mast above the top spreader was pumping with the waves. This in a 1=
0 kt wind. At the end of the season I drilled into the mast step and came o=
ut with wet wood. It seems CM had installed a longitudinal stiffener from t=
he bow to the end of the mast step. As water came in through the inside of =
the mast it eventually migrated through the plastic covering of the step, p=
robably through the bolts, and had been sucked up into the wood.
I removed the top layer of the mast step, keeping the plastic for later =
re installation, and drilled out the stwood as far forward as the beginning=
of the head door. The rest of teh area seemed reasonably dry. I was lucky =
as the brother in law of one of the managers at Caroll Marine, worked for a=
local boat store and after discussing the problem I was advised to use a p=
roduct called "penske board" which I had to buy in a buld 8x12 bul sheet, 1=
" thick. I believe I got it from CM at the time for about $350.00. I cut th=
e board into layers and using an epoxy/fiberglass slurry, fitted these 1" b=
oard into the void I had created above the keel. There is a product the Def=
ender sells which is small fiberglass chips and you buy it by the pound. It=
mixed will with the epoxy to fill gaps and add strength. I then epoxied th=
e original plastic cover over the repair. As a part of my suspenders and be=
lt approach, I found a stainless steel plate which I had cut to the width o=
f the area of the mast step and long enough to go from the back of the mast=
step all the way forward to the beginning of the head door, laid that down=
above the repair and then placed the mast boot over that and tightened the=
keel bolts. The SS plate served to spread the weight of the mast over a lo=
nger area.
One more thing. Carefully inspect the butt late for the mast. if the mas=
t has been flexing up and down, the plate may have tiny cracks in it from f=
lexing. I took mine to a local welder and he repaired the cracks.
The repair worked well, the mast stopped pumping and years later when I =
eventually had to have the keel root worked on, the yard fiberglass guys co=
mplimented me on the repair.
Any one who has questions regarding the above can email me at fwitt1@comcast.net

Subject: [frers-list]Mast Step
Reply-To: frers-list@lists.frers33.com
A weak mast step appears to be a common problem with the 33's....Carro=
ll
Marine did not do a good job with constructing this area.
Our solu=
tion with #33 ( Windswept 3) was to peel off the top skin of the
step fr=
om the forward bunk bulkhead all the way to the bilge sump, remove
the s=
oggy plywood that was supposed to be the structural filler, and replace
=
it with high density foam set on edge.
Any voids were filled with filled=
resin and glass strands. That whole length
of that box became one stiff=
unitized structural beam.
A new fiberglass top skin was laid, faired, a=
nd painted so it looked
original.
While we were at it, woven roving w=
as bonded to the shower sump and the
under-sink sump.
There was a maj=
or improvement in supporting the mast load and keeping the
rig taught, a=
nd it's impervious to water seepage / rot for as long as the
boat lasts.=

I used to have two of these sitting in a box in my garage.=A0 I had replace=
d them after loosing one drum and replacing it and then loosing the other d=
rum which I decided I was not going to replace and just bit the bullet and =
bought two nice Harkens which solved the probelm completely.=A0 In one of t=
he garage clean outs they went to the dump.

Just in case you're wondering it would be around $1000 for two good cabin t=
op self tailing Harkens.
