Jim,
Now is the right time to start discussions!
Dave and I have discussed planning to attend NYYC (Rolex) Race Week with =
or without a class start since it is a really well run event, and we =
have the option to sail one-design or handicap depending on turnout. I =
have just asked NYYC for their dates, but I suspect it will be the long =
weekend of July 17. That would in concept allow for folks in the Sound =
to do a weekend in the Branford area, then pop up to Newport for that =
event. Maybe that's a lot, but certainly worth talking to the crews =
about. I would probably give up Newport in favor of a one-design event =
anywhere. =20
We also just received an invitation to the Lloyd Harbor YC Spring =
series May 22 & 23rd. They are making a big push for one design classes =
this year, and have already gotten committed fleets of J-44 and J-24, =
with Beneteau 36.7, J-105, J-80 and what's left of the Tartan 10s as =
possibles. I think we have 4 active boats in the immediate vicinity, =
ans several more nearby. The start will be in the Sound, near Bell 15 =
off Lloyd's point so you don't need to treck all the way into the bay. =20
We also still have a standing offer for NOODs (Sailing World/Mount Gay) =
in Larchmont in early September.
Think about how sweet it would be to have several Class events in one =
year, after the last few years of light participation. Many of the new =
owners should have crews built up, and there is nothing that energizes =
crew participation like good one-design racing. =20
Perhaps I should stress to the new owners, that the Frers-33 class is a =
Racer/Cruiser class, so while we like to race, we are a bit more =
laid-back than some of the hotter classes. We all enjoy just getting =
the "sisters" together on the course and learning from each other. =
Nothing improves your PHRF performance like getting some one design =
experience.
So let's hear from you all: =20
Who is up for some one-design sailing next season?
Where are you willing to travel to for a good event?
Are there different events that would make more sense?
My answers: Brilliant is in, and we will travel LIS and as far as =
Newport for a one design event. We will even do multiple travel events =
if they are one-design, and reasonably spaced in time and distance.
Keep summer alive - start planning now!

Hi guys, this may be a little premature but rather than scrambling at =
the last minute and for planning purposes it probably is best to talk =
about it this now.
I have really enjoyed the one-design events that we've had at =
Newport and would love to go to another one without the logistical =
concerns of a race that far away. In a burst of selfish, self-interest I =
have asked the two local clubs ( Branford and Pine Orchard) if they =
would give us a one-design start in their yearly regattas and they have =
both enthusiatically agreed, The races are held on subsequent days, =
Saturday and Sunday around the 10th and 11th of July. Could we drum up =
enough interest to field six (minimum required) boats on both days and =
have 2 days of "no excuses" racing ? Jim (More Magic)
