Bob,

Thanks for the description of the through bolt installation. As much as I'=
d like to remove them and refinish over the winter I think I'll leave them =
in place.

I have a frers 36 in the Chicago area
When I refinished my rails I removed the top grab rails to be able to cut r=
eplacements.
The fastened that goes thru the handle goes from the top handle, thru the c=
abin and fasteners in the cabin .
The fastener are 10-24 stainless screws that have a 10-24 nut the goes into=
the plug hole of the cabin grab rail down below.
                Put simply: 10-24 x 2 or 3 or 4=94 stainless steel screw th=
at gets trimmed short enough so the slotted end of the screw is on the top =
side grab rail. The screw nut is in the plug end of the grab rail down bel=
ow in the cabin. To tighten up the fastener you have to screw the fastener =
from the top side, have someone with a nut driver hold the 10-24 nut in the=
plug hole of the grab rail down below till tighten up to your requirement=
s. Its best to slowly tighten all screws slightly then go back and retighte=
n all screws to max load. Oh, Do this process dry, than after confirming th=
e correct lengths screw for each individual hole the bed down the grab rail=
 with sealant.
Good luck

I'm in the process of refinishing the handrails on my cabin top and was con=
sidering removing them in order to strip them more easily as well as work i=
n the comfort of my shop rather than on the boat. I've noticed that the ha=
ndrails both interior and exterior appear to align with each other and both=
have teak plugs over screws. Has anyone removed their handrails, and do y=
ou know if each handrail is screwed into the handrail opposite? My handrai=
ls on the interior are in great shape and not sure if it's worth removing t=
he exterior rails if it involves removing the interior rails in the process=
.
