It is a race tracking system. Check out www.kattrack.com or www.ecsa.net for samples and an explanation. Bottom line, if someone on the boat has an iPhone or Android phone you can purchase the software for $10 (or rent one of their GPS units for more) but the software will track your position and load it up to their system. After the race you can play it all back at accelerated speed to see what everyone did, and figure out what you did right or wrong. You may have seen similar system used in America's Cup broadcasts over the years.
This used to be a fairly expensive proposition but with the cheap smart phone software and ECSA's deal with Kattack, it is a deal that cant be beat. This is probably the only event I will do this year with access to the system so I am now officially jealous of all of you in ECSA. It's like getting coachin time for $10!
Unfortunately Scott, they do not support your Blackberry.
I suspect it's beat to keep the unit below by the nav station and plugged into a cigarette lighter. It may chew through the battery fairly quickly with the GPS running constantly.
