Hi Michael.
I put the tuning guide together with input from several very experienced
Frers 33 owners and information from other sources and in this case Hall
Spars. Since, when I got Equinox I had to get a new headstay I also got the
46 foot measurement from Hall Spars.
The Tuning Guide reads:
"3. Rig Tuning
a) Headstay Length
Prior to stepping the Mast: This length is measured from the center of the
pins at the hounds and the stem fitting and should equal 46' 00". Maximum
headstay length needs to be reduced in heavier air as much as 1 - 2" by
tightening the headstay thereby reducing rake and weather helm."
This is the original measurement and naturally adjustments are made on an
individual boat basis and the area and type of conditions you sail in. As
the others have said the balance within the boat will also depend on a
number of other factors including, mast step location, mainsail draught
location, traveller adjustment (height), backstay tension, sail choice,
mainsail condition and wind/weather conditions.
