Michael........
All too many years ago I had a tiller pilot on my Ranger 29. It was
fantastic....held a course
better than a human could. When I sold it and got my tillered Frers
33, I tried the same
unit ......which I kept....on the Frers. Didn't work at
all. Wouldn't hold a course for even a minute,
started to make small corrections then got flustered and tried to make
larger corrections with
exaggerated movement of the tiller and went totally bonkers. I tried
different mounting locations to
no avail, and finally gave up.
The Ranger rudder is comparatively small in relation to the large one on
the Frers, and I think the
unit just wasn't powerful enough for this bigger load.
I did end up making and installing a tiller comb that worked quite well.
When single handing, it gave
me enough time to do sail adjustments, go below to get something from the
ice box, or make a quick
visit to the head.
If you go ahead with the tiller pilot, I suggest you install an
overly- powerful enough unit.
Best wishes.
