In larger regattas, race committees in our area have been creating =
separate PHRF classes consisting of high performance designs, =
particularly light weight sprit boats and traditional designs with full =
cabins like the Frers. The exact dividing line criteria is a little =
mirky to me, but we've always landed on the traditional side of the =
divide. We often do fine against modern boats, but a race with a long =
heavy air reach leg would certainly favor a planing sprit design and a =
windward/leeward would favor us. This makes it hard to find a fair =
rating between such different boats.=20
