Bill, the rudder should drop out fairly easy once you remove the quadrant. B=
e sure to lubricate the bolts for the quadrant and steering cables so the th=
reads do not gall up when you remove them if they are corroded. Keep somethi=
ng about 6 " under the rudder so it can only drop that far . Remove the uppe=
r bolt with the pivot wheels and the rudder should come down wiggle it back b=
ack and forth and gravity should let it come down. If not step on the top of=
the rudder post as someone wiggles it, check for corrosion on the post.

the rudder won't drop until the key is removed. It is similar to the one i=

he rudder stock on the cockpit sole, removed the quadrant from the rudder st=
ock (four bolts) and keyway and rudder stock and rudder should drop down. Y=
ou will need to slack off steering cables from the quadrant. Place sawhorse=
under rudder to stop it from falling to the ground. Perhaps your system is=
different as some have made modifications. You may need to use some pressu=
re to get rudder to drop out depending upon the type of bushings used and ho=
w hey were installed.
