Bruce and Johnson=92s inspected mine winter of 2018-2019 and said it was in=
great shape, Winter 2019-2020 they notified me they found a longitudinal h=
airline crack through a turnbuckle and micro fractures in the ends of the u=
pper and lower shrouds that needed replacing. Note this was not the result=
of any severe loading or weather, just age.
I now have new upper shrouds, and they cut down the upper shrouds and reuse=
d the rod for the lowers (at their recommendation I didn=92t request that, =
they said the rod was still fine just the ends had started to fail), and re=
placed the turnbuckles for both the upper and lowers. My D2=92s have been r=
eplaced previously and were still in good condition.
Best I could tell my rigging was original, and it was inspected only a year=
before (and previously by the surveyor just the year before that) and foun=
d to be in very good condition. Additionally my rig has been removed and s=
tored indoors the past 2 winters since I bought the boat.
I also used this as a good indicator that it was time to remove, inspect, a=
nd re-bed my chain plates, I replaced all the bolts washers and nuts with n=
ew hardware, and also had upgraded the backing plates made from =BC=94 SS p=
late steel to provide better strength there too.
Cost was ~$1k for the shrouds and turnbuckles, and ~$250 for the chain plat=
e fasteners and upgraded backing plates.
Short answer, if it hasn=92t been replaced before it doesn=92t have long le=
ft before something is likely to fail, and just because everything was good=
last year doesn=92t mean it still is today.

Subject: [frers-list]Rod Rigging replacement time
I have been trying to find out roughly when rod rigging needs/or should be =
retired. From what I can tell some use it until they see their first evide=
nce of a crack or corrosion or they just say use it no more than 20 years. =
I really have not had much experience with it before my boat. What have o=
thers done with theirs? One point to make, previous owners have not raced =
my boat and I only have a little for the past 3 years so it has not been he=
avily loaded.
I ask because mine is still original from 1987 years old but still appears =
to be in good shape. Planning to have it inspected this winter and also add=
a roller upfront. One rigger said he would replace it with cable for liab=
ility reasons. Another sailor says use it till you see first visible signs=
or corrosion or a crack. Planning to talk with my local rigger at my mari=
na for their thoughts as well.
Thanks for any advice,
Frank
