Fantastic job Brian! Sounds like you had quite the sleigh ride and played =
the course smartly. Congratulations to you and your crew.

Dick, I believe your math is correct, assuming we had sailed only the 207nm=
used for scoring, but as with any sailing race we actually sailed farther =
than just the distance used for scoring.=C2=A0 IIRC our instruments said we=
actually covered around 235-240nm.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Only rarely during th=
e race did our STW drop below 7kts, and frequently it was above 8! That of =
course doesn=E2=80=99t factor in currents, which both helped and hurt at va=
rious points in the race.
=C2=A0
=20
Early on in the run back down the sound off long sand shoal, with winds bet=
ween 16-20 we had the #3 outboard sheeted and a reefed main, cracked off at=
56 deg TWA and averaging about 7.9kts STW with sustained speeds as high as=
8.2kts. We sailed that way nearly the whole length of the sound trucking a=
long with 4 deg of rudder to weather and the autopilot holding course the w=
hole way (but barely doing anything as the boat was very well balanced).=C2=
=A0=C2=A0 Shortly before sunset I went down and boiled some water to make s=
ome freeze dried pad thai (much better than it sounds) for a hot meal to ke=
ep our energy up as we went into the final push to the finish line.
=C2=A0
=20
As for the Pearson & Beneteau, I=E2=80=99m not sure if they even flew a spi=
nnaker the whole race.=C2=A0 The winds Thursday were high enough that many =
of the boat that did fly one simply exploded it, and many more chose not to=
out of fear of blowing it up.=C2=A0 Plus if you=E2=80=99re already sailing=
along around hull speed without it, there=E2=80=99s not that much more spe=
ed they would have gotten with it. We did fly our heavy 1.5oz sym DDW for a=
few hours to good advantage overnight (would have kept it up but a shackle=
let self released and by the time we unwrapped the kite from the forestay,=
twice, buy me a beer for that story, we were too tired to go back up until=
we got some rest), and then at sunrise the wind started to come forward en=
ough where we put up our A3 and flew that until it turned into a beat from =
around Montauk all the way down the sound, and then again put up the A3 as =
we rounded Matinecock Point for the run to the finish.

Brian, congratulations! =C2=A0If my math is correct that=E2=80=99s an avera=
ge of 6.28 knots over the 207nm course. =C2=A0Incredible win in the PHRF Do=
ublehanded Division 7. =C2=A0Interesting that the two boats who corrected u=

The race was actually the final leg of a 10 day ~800nm trip for us which al=
so included a less satisfying 6th place finish in the Edgartown Around-The-=
Island race around Martha=E2=80=99s Vineyard (it was really light wind & ev=
entually found a hole allowing several boats to sail around before we got m=
oving again), and various stops along the way including Falmouth & New Bedf=
