Subject: RE: [frers-list]Persistence rudder bearing project continues
When we decided to look at the rudder bearings on Persistence there was not=
a lot of information showing how this is to be done. By contrast everythi=
ng from Wheel bearings on Chevy Silverado to transmission work on Mazda 3 h=
ad step by step Youtube videos.
For this reason we decided to photo document the process on Persistence web=
site to make the job just a little bit easier for others contemplating the =
same job. Granted Persistence is a Carrol Marine Frers 33 and not a C&C bu=
ild but many of the steps are the same or at least very similar.
The project can be seen on www.hoytsailing.com <http://www.hoytsailing.com>=
at a link on the bottom of the page.
In November the initial step was how to get the quadrant removed and the ru=
dder out. This was followed by =E2=80=9CHow do I removed the bearings?=E2=
=80=9D (in fact they are bushings on Persistence). We have now come to the=
=E2=80=9CInspect and repair any rudder defects=E2=80=9D portion of the pro=
ject.
The Frers 33 has a solid aluminum rudder shaft. On our boats we typically =
use copper based antifouling paints. This leads to pitting in the shaft ne=
ar top of rudder. On top of that decades of wear and tear cause the shaft t=
o be just a bit smaller than when manufactured at the bushings.
The latest work can be seen on the web link posted above
