Thanks for the link Mike. Great to have the documentation. Would you mind i=
f I have Dick Saunders (webmaster, Out of Reach) link to it from the Frers =
33 site? Would be nice to have it available for those that plan to tackle t=
he job themselves.=C2=A0

When we decided to look at the rudder bearings on Persistence there was not=
a lot of information showing how this is to be done.=C2=A0 By contrast eve=
rything from Wheel bearings on Chevy Silverado to transmission work on Mazd=
a 3 had step by step Youtube videos.
=20
=C2=A0
=20
For this reason we decided to photo document the process on Persistence web=
site to make the job just a little bit easier for others contemplating the =
same job.=C2=A0 Granted Persistence is a Carrol Marine Frers 33 and not a C=
&C build but many of the steps are the same or at least very similar.

The project can be seen onwww.hoytsailing.com at a link on the bottom of th=
e page.

In November the initial step was how to get the quadrant removed and the ru=
dder out.=C2=A0 This was followed by =E2=80=9CHow do I removed the bearings=
?=E2=80=9D (in fact they are bushings on Persistence).=C2=A0 We have now co=
me to the =E2=80=9CInspect and repair any rudder defects=E2=80=9D portion o=
f the project.

=C2=A0

The Frers 33 has a solid aluminum rudder shaft.=C2=A0 On our boats we typic=
ally use copper based antifouling paints.=C2=A0 This leads to pitting in th=
e shaft near top of rudder. On top of that decades of wear and tear cause t=
he shaft to be just a bit smaller than when manufactured at the bushings.
