I have not installed a drain plug for when the boat is on the hard. This was recommended to me but this year we moved Moose inside for the winter. Maybe next year. I had a drain plug on my previous boat. It was located at the lowest point feasible. Do not forget to put it back before launching the boat. This was forgotten one year with the previous boat when the yard ignored my written reminder and I arrived to find water an inch or two above the cabin sole. They had to haul the boat back out, drain it out, install the plug and relaunch.
While under way, if you run the bilge pump while the boat is level, for example before you get under way, then the water level should be low enough to keep the water in the bilge. The source of water intrusion on Moose appears to be rain. If you will be under way in the rain then additional water may accumulate. The other source is the propeller shaft and the stuffing box should be properly maintained, or install a dripless stuffing box which is what we have on Moose.
Finally, leave a terry rag in the corner on the
floor and keep a bucket handy in case you need it. For that
purpose, and also when cleaning the bilge, dish gloves ease the
wear and tear on your skin.
We had garboard drains on our previous two boats (Niagara 26 and J/27) but not on Persistence. On the J boat I installed from INSIDE the bilge and then in the spring would fair over the outer opening with a polyester filler so that it was smooth. In the Fall would remove the plug from the inside and pop out the filler on the outside. By installing from the inside rather than from outside there was no disturbance in flow over the area
For water ingress our biggest problem was always the mast. Some years it was over two months before we managed to seal up most of the leaks at that area. Last year we installed Spar Tite. No more water coming from mast
PS. Persistence is getting a new paint job!

Southern Cross has a drain at the bottom of the bilg= e, it=92s not at the absolute lowest point, but it=92s pretty close. = Not more than a cup or so of water can remain once it=92s pulled after haul= out, and it helps dry out the bilge over the winter.
During the summer the mast is pretty much the only s= ource of leaks aside from the stuffing box. I can=92t quite figure ou= t where it still leaks from as I=92ve sealed everything I can find, particu= larly plugging the track at desk level so it can=92t flow water down past the boot, yet it still can get small continuo= us flows running down the mast to the bilge during heavy rains. I pla= n to test one remaining theory in the spring=85

Hi Courtney
We started with something similar to this Buy Sea Dog Garboard Drain & Plug Machined Bronze in Canada Binnacle.com
Drilled the hole low in the bilge, epoxied and screwed in place from the inside
The process on our J27 is documented here:
Garbord Drain (hoytsailing.com)

John,
Thanks for the reply.
Could you be specific about how you'd go about installing a garboard plug on a Frers 33, please ?
Appreciatively,
Courtney Thomas
