I have not installed a drain plug for when the boat is on the hard. This
was recommended to me but this year we moved Moose inside for the
winter. Maybe next year. I had a drain plug on my previous boat. It was
located at the lowest point feasible. Do not forget to put it back
before launching the boat. This was forgotten one year with the previous
boat when the yard ignored my written reminder and I arrived to find
water an inch or two above the cabin sole. They had to haul the boat
back out, drain it out, install the plug and relaunch.

While under way, if you run the bilge pump while the boat is level, for
example before you get under way, then the water level should be low
enough to keep the water in the bilge. The source of water intrusion on
Moose appears to be rain. If you will be under way in the rain then
additional water may accumulate. The other source is the propeller shaft
and the stuffing box should be properly maintained, or install a
dripless stuffing box which is what we have on Moose.

Finally, leave a terry rag in the corner on the floor and keep a bucket
handy in case you need it. For that purpose, and also when cleaning the
bilge, dish gloves ease the wear and tear on your skin.
