Dear Town of Middleton E-mail List Members,

Thursday through Sunday noon I will be helping to build a portion of the =
Ice Age Trail on the north side of the Village of Cross Plains. If you =
would like to come out a help that would be great. At the end of this =
message I have included information from Tim Malzahn regarding this =
project.

Hello all,=20

   =20
Picture if you will the scene from the Wizard of Oz where the =
cowardly lion first appears; the tin man, Dorothy and scarecrow are =
shaking with the unknown when on cue the lion roars and scares the =
beezejus out of 'em; soon enough, Dorothy snaps her handkerchief, =
scarecrow spits straw, the tin man waves his pick, and Whala! the =
quartet is next seen merrily skipping their way down the yellow-blazed =
trail. The "Critically Edgy Summer 2004 Mobile Skills Crew Tour" rolls =
into the village of Cross Plains in Dane County Thursday August 19th =
through Sunday noon August 22nd to initiate an ambitious trail building =
project that is guaranteed to challenge every fiber of our collective =
knowledge and experience as trailbuilders. You're invited to team-up =
for the Trail, work safe, have fun, and... get it done!=20

This =BD-mile section of the IAT will be the anchor of a new segment =
heading north from the village that explores the "driftless" country - =
the part of Wisconsin untouched by the last continental ice sheet. We =
start curbside on a residential street and work our way up a 50% =
crossslope of thin soil and dolomite that, topside, offers views to the =
south and east of what Increase Lapham described as the "Great Dividing =
Ridge". On that distant ridge is a lone majestic oak that foretells a =
certain future - one that hikers will sure enough look towards and say - =
"Thats where we'll be come sunset". From this hard-earned vantage point =
we 4-step and stump our way north towards camp. Much of the corridor =
has been cleared. Significant rock and technical work awaits. Advance =
chapter workdays have been productive and word of your arrival is keenly =
anticipated. No flying monkeys are anticipated but the pleasure of your =
response is requested for crew and meal planning purposes by August =
14th. Please respond at your earliest convenience to Tim Malzhan, =
tim@iceagetrail.org, 608.592.1433, and to Jean Potter, =
jean@iceagetrail.org, 920.787.6592.=20

Happy Trails! If we haven't seen you in awhile... the time and =
place to reconnect is right. Looking forward to seeing you (bring a =
friend!) soon,

the mobile skills crew dane county project team

=20

 =20

DIRECTIONS: To the Village of Cross Plains. From Madison take Highway =
14 west to Cross Plains. Continue 4 blocks past the stoplight (where =
County Highway P intersects with State Highway 14 at Culvers Restaurant) =
and turn right onto Caesar Street. Go 3 blocks and turn left onto Lewis =
Street. Continue through the new housing development and meet at the =
turnaround at the end of Lewis Street. Watch for the yellow and black =
ICE AGE TRAIL EVENT signs. Access to the camp area (IAPTF owned) is up =
a farm road that may be unnecessarily challenging for some 2-wheel drive =
passenger vehicles. Don't fight it and don't worry - we'll shuttle you =
up or you can hike the 10 minutes with your gear. IAPTF assumes no =
responsibility for damage to your car. For those who are not camping, =
parking will be on Lewis Street and at a nearby secondary location =
should numbers swell. =20

WHAT TO BRING: Leather work gloves, daypack, water bottles, sunscreen, =
insect repellant, sturdy work/hiking boots, long-sleeve shirt and pants, =
hat, handkerchief, raingear, personal needs, swim suit, towel, camping =
gear. Ice Age Park and Trail Foundation will provide tools, safety =
equipment, training, camping, and food. AGAIN, WE REQUEST THAT YOU =
PRE-REGISTER/RSVP FOR CREW and MEAL PLANNING NEEDS. Be ready to pitch in =
with cleaning and other camp duties and bring a tent, sleeping bag, pad, =
etc, if camping. Area motels and B&Bs are available - call with =
questions. The village of Cross Plains has kindly waived pool use fees =
and extended the standard municipal pool hours for our convenience and =
shower (it'll be cozy) needs. =20

DAY PLAN: Thursday 8:00 am- Sunday noon: Trail crews are assembled and =
work from about 8:00 am to about 4:30 pm. Trail building is =
non-competitive and everyone works to his or her own abilities. =
Breakfast will be served from 7 - 7:30 am. Lunch and breaks will be in =
the field. Dinner hours will be announced. Meet at the tool trailer or =
walk up the trail and join a crew. THURSDAY WORK DAY STARTS AT 8:00 AM =
- CALL IF INTERESTED IN ARRIVING WEDNESDAY -members of the project team =
will be on-site and camping Wednesday.

WHAT WE NEED: Volunteers to help as greeters, with logistics and =
shuttles, and with camp needs; DONATIONS: 6" x 8" x 8' Pressure Treated =
Landscape Timbers and 1/2" Rebar donations would be most welcome.
