The Town is having many of its roads seal coated. The contractor moved =
the time frame up very quickly and athey started seal coating on =
Thursday. I will e-mail a list of roads monday at the latest.=20

This year we are primarily using the coal slag coating instead of the =
pea stone or coal slag over the top of a pea stone seal coat. In some =
cases we are covering last year's pea stone seal coat with a coal slag =
seal coat.

In all cases we are using an emulsion which will set up faster with less =
tracking than the oil based material.

Please, have patience. They spread the coal slag over the emulsion =
within minutes and roll it immediately afterwards. Once they roll the =
surface, the road can be driven on. we will not have a repeat of last =
year's problems where the precoated pea stone adhered to tires instead =
of the road surface and where the excess pea stone sluffed off for =
several months afterwards.

The loose pea stone was swept up two and in someplaces three times but =
the the pea stone continued to sluff off after the sweepings.

The coal slag surface will not be as smooth as the original ashpalt =
surface, however it is essential to seal the roads in order to prevent =
or reduce damage from water getting into the asplalt and into the base. =
The water weakens the base and allows more flexing that will allow the =
asphalt to break up. When water is present, the freezing and thawing =
cycles going into and coming out of winter can also break up pavement =
and weaken the base.

Please, report any problems that you encounter during the construction =
process.
