DANE COUNTY ASKS CITIZENS TO KEEP LEAVES OUT OF STORM DRAINS, DITCHES AND
STREETS TO PROTECT LAKES AND STREAMS

When the leaves blanket your yard this autumn, protect your lakes and
streams by keeping leaves out of the street, gutter or ditch.

"Most folks don't realize that leaves can be a nagging source of local water
pollution," says Dane County Lakes and Watershed Commission Chair Brett
Hulsey. "Five percent of the phosphorus runoff to Lake Mendota comes from
existing urban sources, including leaves."

While they seem biodegradable and harmless, excess leaves pose a threat to
Dane County's lake and stream water quality. Leaves in the street make their
way to our lakes and streams when rain washes them down storm drains and
ditches. Even if the leaves themselves don't move, rain seeping through leaf
piles makes a rich "nutrient tea" that flows along the curb into the storm
drains.  Stormwater that goes into the street storm drains and road ditches
is not treated at wastewater treatment plants. Rather, stormwater drains
directly into our lakes and streams, carrying leaves and other debris with
it.

Once they get into the water and begin to decay, the leaves release
nutrients that contribute to the accelerated growth of algae. The result is
a greenish-tinted lake choked with foul smelling, dying algae that can kill
fish and other aquatic critters and generally make water recreation an
unpleasant experience.

"The solution is simple," says Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk. "To keep
it out of the lakes, we've got to keep it out of the gutter."

The distance between your yard and the water's edge is as close as the
nearest storm drain or ditch. So, the simplest way that you can help clean
the lakes is to keep the leaves out of the street, gutter or ditch. Consider
these alternatives to raking:
· Add leaves to a home compost pile to create a nutrient-rich
fertilizer for your vegetable and flower gardens and other landscaping
projects. Composting has the added advantage of reducing the local
government collection cost. Composting leaves saves money and helps the
environment.
· Some people bag their leaves or get bales from their municipality to
use as insulation around their home's foundation to reduce heat loss during
the winter. Then in spring, the leaves are used as mulch or are composted.
· If you rake, collect the leaves at the edge of the curb-not in the
gutter or ditch. Make sure to sweep or rake leaves out of the street, gutter
or ditch so that they don't get washed down the storm drain. Cover the
leaves with a tarp or bag them until the day when work crews pick up the
leaves or check out the links listed below. Contact your local municipality
for the leaf collection dates and requirements (bagging, covered on curb,
etc.) for your neighborhood.
· Till them into your garden.
· If you have a mulching mower, you can chop the leaves into small
particles that will decompose directly into your lawn. If you have a bagger
on your mulching mower, you can use the mulched leaves in flowerbeds and
around shrubs.
· Many communities collect leaves and take them to community compost
facilities, and over 25,000 tons of leaves a year are handled this way in
Dane County each year.

Don't burn leaves. Research shows burning leaves harms people with asthma
and other respiratory problems. Burning leaves also puts nutrients into the
air, which can make their way to lakes and streams, adding to the pollution
problem of our waters. Ashes are also a source of highly concentrated
nutrients. Runoff can carry the ashes to the nearest pond, stream or lake.
Burning leaves and trash causes over half of the wildfires in the state each
year.
