The Dane County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rash of residential
daytime burglaries reported in the western part of the county between
September 25th and September 28th.

A total of eight burglaries were reported over the three-day period;
five in the Town of Middleton and three in the Town of Montrose. While
some homes were accessed through unlocked doors, others were forced
entries. The thieves stole items such as cash, jewelry, electronics,
and guns.

Anyone with information on these crimes is asked to call the Dane County
tip line at (608) 284-6900. The Sheriff's Office also reminds citizens
to lock homes and garages, and secure valuables inside the home. Be
aware of the comings and goings in your neighborhood and report anything
that appears suspicious immediately.

In discussing this with Town of Middleton Deputy Page - he stresses that
if something suspicious is occurring, call 911 IMMEDIATELY. Do not call
the Town offices since they are not the right number to call. Calling
the Town offices may mean that the suspicious activity may be past and
the opportunity to track the suspicious activity lost due to the delay
relaying information to the right party. =20

The Dane County Sheriff's Department continues to handle complaints
about "suspicious" activity or persons in a few of the residential
areas. More may be going unreported. Here are some tips if you or
someone you know witnesses this type of situation.
* If it seems strange to you, it probably is. Call 911
immediately and get a Deputy headed your way.=20
* If there is a vehicle involved, try and relay as much
information about the vehicle to the dispatcher as you can without
putting yourself in harm's way. If the vehicle leaves prior to the
Deputies arrival, if possible a direction of travel for the car is also
helpful.
* If the situation involves people, please provide any physical
descriptors that you can safely observe.

Another area of concern is an increase in thefts from vehicles and
garages. Please make sure your cars are locked in your driveways and
you close and lock your garage doors, especially the small pedestrian
door, every night.=20
