The Town of Middleton has a confirmed Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) infestation o=
n the north side, north of Airport Road. Based on observations and extent =
of the infested trees at the intersection of Horizon Road and Horizon Court=
, EAB has likely been in the area for 5 or more years We recommend that pr=
operty owners who have ash trees in their yards:

  * Keep a close watch on ash trees for signs of possible EAB infestation=
:
=FC Thinning in the canopy
=FC D-shaped holes in the bark,
=FC New branches sprouting low on the trunk,
=FC Cracked bark, and
=FC Woodpeckers pulling at the bark to get to insect larvae beneath it.

  * Consider preventive treatments. Treatment costs vary depending on si=
ze of the tree and whether you do the treatments yourself or hire a profess=
ional. For more information:

Treating_for_Emerald_Ash_Borer.pdf>

North Central Integrated Pest Management Center<http://www.emeraldashborer.=
info/files/Multistate_EAB_Insecticide_Fact_Sheet.pdf>

  * When replanting, consider planting a variety of tree species that are=
not susceptible to EAB Oak Wilt or Dutch Elm Disease.
  * Call a professional arborist for expert advice, and visit emeraldashb=
orer.wi.gov for detailed information.
  * Slow the spread of EAB by following these guidelines<http://datcpserv=
ices.wisconsin.gov/eab/articleassets/Recommendations%20to%20reduce%20the%20=
spread%20of%20EAB.pdf>. Wood may be placed at the edge of the road for the=
 Town Crew to chip.
  * Information about EAB from the Dane County Tree Board<http://www.tree=
board.org/EmeraldAshBorer.aspx>

Emerald ash borer is native to China and probably entered the United States=
on packing material, showing up first in Michigan about 10 years ago. EAB=
adults lay eggs on the bark of ash trees in mid to late summer. When the e=
ggs hatch a week or two later, the larvae burrow under the bark for the win=
ter and eat the wood, forming the characteristic S-shaped tunnels and destr=
oying the tree's ability to take up nutrients and water. In summer, the adu=
lts emerge through D-shaped holes in the bark.
