Snow Plowing Operation Has Begun
When the snow starts to fall, the Town activates its Snow and Ice Removal P=
lan. Both plowing and salt-spreading operations help control winter road h=
azards.
Snow Plowing Suggestions and Safety Reminders
* Remove your vehicles from public streets when approximately 2 inc=
hes of snow has fallen or is predicted to fall.
Parked vehicles in the road not only make it harder for our drivers to thor=
oughly clean the streets, but it also endangers their safety by forcing the=
m to zigzag in and out of traffic on slippery roads, thereby increasing the=
chance for an accident to occur.
* If possible, stay off the road.
If driving on the roads is necessary, please maintain a safe distance when =
driving behind a snow plow or salt truck. Stay back at least 200 feet and =
use brakes carefully. It takes more time and distance to stop in adverse c=
onditions.
* Drive cautiously!
Winter driving requires motorists to be careful and alert, but the most imp=
ortant tip for winter driving is: SLOW DOWN!
* Do not shovel or blow snow into public streets.
This not only defeats the purpose of our snow plowing, but causes unsafe co=
nditions for all drivers.
* Keep garbage containers for pickup off from the roadway.
Garbage containers should be put out on the easement, not in the street.
* Don't expect us to leave the base of your driveway clean and neat=
.
Although we would like to minimize the problem, there is no way to plow the=
street so that your driveway remains "snow free".
DRIVEWAY SNOW SHOVELING RECOMMENDATIONS
When shoveling the end of the driveway near the street, place the snow to t=
he right of the driveway (as you face the street). If it is piled on the ot=
her side, it is more likely to be pushed into the driveway apron when the s=
treets are being plowed. Also, clear a few feet of the edge of the street a=
nd curb to the left of the driveway (as you face the street). This creates =
a pocket for the snow to spill into and will help reduce the amount of snow=
at the end of the driveway.
