PulsePoint =96 Save a Life, Get the App
How can we improve patient outcomes from cardiac arrest? How can we double =
or even triple people=92s chances for survival? How can I help save a life?
There=92s an exciting new opportunity both you and your community may be in=
terested in. Dane County Emergency Medical Services, Meriter-UnityPoint Hea=
lth, and the City of Madison are excited to introduce PulsePoint=AE Respond=
mobile application to Dane County.
PulsePoint=AE Respond is a mobile application that lies at the intersection=
of technology, innovation, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Based on =
a smartphone=92s GPS coordinates, PulsePoint=AE Respond alerts CPR-trained =
bystanders to someone nearby who is having a sudden cardiac event that may =
require CPR. The mobile app is activated by the Dane County Public Safety C=
ommunications Center simultaneously with the dispatch of local EMS and fire=
resources.
The purpose of the mobile app is to increase the survival rates of cardiac =
arrest victims by:
1. Reducing collapse-to-CPR time by increasing citizen awareness of card=
iac events beyond a traditional =93witnessed=94 area.
2. Reducing collapse-to-defibrillation times by increasing awareness of =
public access to automatic external defibrillator (AED) locations through r=
eal-time mapping of nearby devices.
The mobile app is only activated if the event is occurring in a public plac=
e (the app is not activated for residential addresses). The CPR alerts appe=
ar just as other notifications on a smartphone, such as texts or voicemails=
but with a distinctive alert tone. The app also shows the location of the =
nearest AED, provides directions to the AED in real-time in context with th=
e responders=92 current location. In addition to the life-saving CPR/AED fu=
nctionality, the app provides a window into EMS and Fire activity in your c=
ommunity, offering a unique opportunity for civic engagement and transparen=
cy.
