Lithography: Acid Tint Technique

Instructor: Carolyn Muskat, Muskat Studios (www.muskatstudios.com)
Course Fee: $160 members / $200 non-members
Class date/time: October 13th - 14th , 10:30 am - 2:30 pm

Acid tinting is a unique process in lithography for the controlled
creation of grey values on stone. Offering great flexibility, acid tint
can yield mezzotint-like effects. Beginning with solid black tones, the
artist uses this technique to achieve varying degrees of lighter grey
washes or flat tones. Used alone or in combination with
more traditional drawing techniques, acid tinting adds an exciting
dimension to the art of lithography.

*Includes 8 hours of free studio time good for 4 weeks after the last
class!

Carolyn Muskat is a Tamarind Master Printer proprietor of Muskat
Studios, a lithography studio in Boston,
Massachusetts. She has been printing and collaborating professionally
for 20 years as well as teaching
printmaking at numerous art schools across the country. Not only a
printer and instructor, she is an artist
who has shown her work nationallly and is included in many print
collections.

"I am a printmaker. Whether working solely within a printmaking medium
or beyond, the concepts of print
and printmaking infuse my work. By this, I mean the issues of layering,
of building, of constructing, as well
as digging back through the layers to get to an underlying moment.

Printmaking provides a structure to separate one's thought processes, a
recognition of the steps one must
go through to create anything. Images begin with an idea, a conceptual
direction. As the relationships
between the different components evolve, I adjust them, respond to them,
and grow with them as they
develop into individual pieces. Printmaking allows me the opportunity
and flexibility to mix, mingle and
cross-reference images to truly explore aspects of visual meaning and
interpretation."

processes. The large, well lit, ventilated working space includes three
large etching presses and two lithography presses (can print up to 40" x
60"), an acid room with a dedicated ventilation system, and an
Anderson-Vreeland processor for photo polymer plates. The digital lab
includes Mac G5s, scanner, and printers. In addition, there are two
editioning rooms, one for lithography, and one for etching. There are
more than 100 lithographic stones available for artists' use. The RBPMW
Collection room houses the print archives for research and a small
exhibition space.=20
