Sorry, I've been out of town, so I am a little late to
reply.
I do not believe you are looking at the full context
of the lyrics. It's easy to lift one statement and say
she's looking for security and ignore the other
statements such as "known to carry big things, if you
know what I mean" which is either making a reference
to a concealed weapon or a part of the male anatomy.
The song is promoting the idea that young women prefer
men with "thug" appeal. I hardly doubt the members of
Destiny's Child ever grew up anywhere near "the
streets" and therefore, they are acting out a popular
smitten fantasy of being with a bad boy. Besides, I
hardly believe the ladies of DC would walk through
Homewood, the Hill or Broadhead searching for "Mr.
Right." I don't think we can use Jay-Z as a fitting
example to justify the song either.
You know what really bothers me about the lyrics and
in essence your response is the summation that it
"sounds like she's just asking for security... I guess
the alternative is to want a guy who won't stand up
for her." The first thing I ask is what type of
security are you referring to -- emotional or physical
security? Secondly, are you trying to say an honest
brother with a 9 to 5 job who doesn't have "street
cred" (whatever that is supposed to be anyway)
wouldn't stand up for his woman? I find that hard to
believe.
I think a large portion of our society simply accepts
what it is fed and we no longer question the messages
being propagated throughout popular culture.
Just as an aside, the video was quite corny and it
looked to me like Michelle Williams was afraid of the
dog. "Lose My Breath" is a hot single, personally, I
think they released another one too soon.
