A friend passed this along..Keep it handy while searching the census records:

Trying to figure out dates- why is/isn't so and so on the census, etc? This
may answer some of your questions:

Oft times it would take several months to almost a year for a census taker
[CT] to complete his route-so it didn't matter what date he appeared on
someone's doorstep-he had to use the following dates when taking down
information..

So if your ancestor was living on say, 4 Aug, but died 10 Aug when the
census taker visited..your ancestor would be listed in the 1800 census as
living.

Also keep in mind: The 1820 census is the only one that required listing
males old enough to serve in the Militia...So watch the head count!
Example: In the 16-26 yrs old for males catagory, ALL males between these
ages in the Household were listed.
THEN they would AGAIN be listed under their own age groups- so keep in mind
there may actually be only ONE 16 year old male-not TWO 16 year old males..

  Enumeration day

1790 1st Monday of Aug all persons present in the house

1800 Aug 4 all persons present in the house

1810 Aug 6 all persons present in the house

1820 Aug 7 all persons present in the house

1830 June 1st, all persons present in the house

1840 June 1st all persons present in the house

1850 to 1900 June 1st only those people who normally living in the
house, whether present on that day or not.

1910 April 15 only those people who normally living in the house, whether
present on that day or not.

1920 Jan 1 only those people who normally living in the house, whether
present on that day or not.
