>Letter from Richard C SHELBY (then Representative of AL-1978, now Senator
>1998), to Mrs Hoberta Frost, 13 Nov 1978.-
>... He (John Rufus Shelby) and his wife are both buried at Mount Pleasant
>Presbyterian Church north of Selma, AL."

I have searched the whole cemetery of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church
outside of Selma and found no tombstone for John Rufus. I did find a
tombstone for a Martha Shelby, which was a common tombstone with a Quintilla
Shelby b. 1854 d. 1857 (both names were on one tombstone). This Martha was
born 20 Dec. 1856 and died 20 Oct 1860, Dallas Co. Both must have been
children of somebody Shelby but this Martha is definitely not Martha Deaton
Shelby. Also, they are not listed in the common records of the funeral
homes around Dallas Co. It would be strange that Mary Ann Knox Shelby is
buried there, with tombstone, and they are not. They definitely had the
money for headstones.

I have looked everywhere, including asking about, and found no "Pea Ridge"
Cemetery in Dallas Co. I had assumed, because the name is included with
"Mount Pleasant", that Pea Ridge was an earlier name for the cemetery. This
is also a very strange Church. The Funeral Director I spoke with said it
was still an active church, but there is no phone listing in Dallas Co., or
any other county around it, and no one could find a minister for it
anywhere. Seems like the twilight zone.

Martha
