Reply-To: shelby@lists.trolinger.com

I am not a SHELBY, but doing research for my daughter-in-law who is.
She is from SE Missouri, descended from E. B. (Elip Barnes) SHELBY and
Lucretia LATHAM or LATHEM.

I have found an Isaac L. SHELBY with a land patent in Stoddard County,
MO signed 01/01/1859. The land is in the same Township, Range, and
Section (19) as some land owned by Abner Williams who was married to
Elizabeth DOWDY. She supposedly married the second time to "Lafayette"
SHELBY, after Abner died. She had 2 children with Abner, and 2 with the
last name of SHELBY: E. B. and Mary C.

There are also Land patents in 1841 in MO - Saline County - for
Lafayette, James, and Richard P. SHELBY.

I'm having trouble locating any records on Isaac L. as the Stoddard
County courthouse burned in 1864.
I have checked the census and found :
1850 - Elizabeth Dowdy living with father Matthew in Stoddard Co., MO
1860 - Elizabeth Shelby living with 4 children and no husband

I'm not sure where to go next. I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

Thanks

Carol

Hi Carol,
I am a Shelby descendant, however, Isaac is not in my direct line... mine
is Rees and Mary Shelby who settled last in South Carolina. I am sorry, I
do
not know anything about your Shelby ancestor.
There are a number of books written about the Shelby families.. it was
huge.. so there are Shelbys in every state of the US, I am sure.
My suggestion would be.. contact your local library and ask them to
search
for books that were written about the Shelbys. There was an Issac Shelby
who was very high in rank during the Revolutionary war.. the War at Kings
Mountain might be a good place to start..
or check with Stoddard county.. they might have something that might help
you..
I will keep your email and check some of my records to see if I have
anything on Isaac.. I have a huge file on my Shelby line but also other
families
as well...

Happy Hunting..
   Judith

Hi, my mother was a Shelby, her father James Pherrin Shelby ( b. 1883) =
was one of 14 children born to John Lowery Shelby Jr. and Charity Weaver =
near Lost Creek in Union County, Tennessee. John L Shelby Jr was born =
July 18,1940 and his father was Captain John L Shelby Sr. I have visited =
his grave up in Union County when I was very little when my great uncle =
could take us up there to see the cabin where my grandmother who is a =
Weaver was born. I have most of the siblings' names, birth and death =
dates if anyone is interested. John and Charity died in a small pox =
epidemic in 1904.

There the trail ends and I am trying to find out who is Capt John L =
Shelby Sr's father- ? Evan Shelby- but which one is the question, if it =
even is him. My great uncle talked about the cousins fighting against =
each other in the Civil War- against Gen. Joe Shelby (b. 1830 in KY)who =
took settlers to Mexico after the war. I would like to establish the =
lineage back to Evan Shelby as I was told we are decended from him.

I can't read the tree, maybe someone could explain it to me--
Thanks,
