Tool Tip # 15: A Glossary of Useful Terms


 

The following terms are useful to know when using the vPSI Pre-Task Planning
Tool and Library.

 

.         JSA (Job Safety Analysis): a method of generating and applying
corrective actions before an accident happens, involving an examination of
the various hazards and dangers related to the job elements and assignments
that address them.  Also called Job Hazard Analysis, Pre-Task Planning
Document, Tool Box Talk, etc.

.         Environment: optional field on the pre-task planning document; can
be used to describe the general environment of the area (desert, forest, ice
tundra, etc) or to describe adjacent jobs affecting the work environment.

.         Key Task Element: changes in activities, equipment, personnel, or
conditions.

.         Hazard: energy sources with the capacity to cause unplanned things
to happen.

.         Danger: things people might do that would put them in contact with
a hazard.

.         Global Assignments: specific assignments given to specific (named)
crew members to reduce or eliminate dangers related to the environment (not
related to specific Key Task Elements).

.         Corrective Actions: specific duties assigned to specific (named)
crew members to reduce or eliminate identified dangers identified with
specific Key Task Elements.  The duties can be pre-filled with the specific
assignments added in the field right before the job is done.
