Tool Tip # 16: Pre-Task Plans: A Rose By Any Other Name...


 

There are a multitude of pre-task planning documents out there. These
include, at a minimum:

 

.         Tool Box Talk

.         Risk Assessment

.         Job Safety Analysis (JSA) 

.         Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)

.         Permit to Work (PTW)

.         Tailgate Safety Meeting

.         Pre-job Safety Meeting

.         Risk & Impact Assessment

 

No matter the name at the top of the document, the ultimate objective is the
same: to get the job done with no nasty surprises. The mechanism by which
this is done varies slightly with each document type, yet the best way to
accomplish this is the one most pre-task plans leave out: concrete tasks
that are both relevant to and effective against identified hazards. Once
assigned to specific individuals in the work team, such actions are far more
likely to positively influence the way the task is carried out in real life.
