I have come across a PhD thesis written some 20 years ago, which has a =
lot of fascinating information about farming and society in general =
around Wedmore in the 16th and 17th centuries, and which I would =
thoroughly recommend to anyone researching this period. The details are:
Patricia E C Croot: "Aspects of Agrarian society in Brent Marsh, =
Somerset, 1500-1700" (PhD thesis, University of Leeds, December 1981)
It is available on microfilm via the British Library's document supply =
centre. (The BL's shelfmark is D44459/83.) Other UK-based university =
libraries and probably public libraries should be able to get hold of it =
through the BL.=20
I have been in touch with the author, who is now at London University, =
as I thought an electronic version might make a good subject for the =
Wedmore site, and perhaps could be produced from a scanned copy. Dr =
Croot has replied as follows:
Unfortunately, the thesis was written a long time ago before I had a =
computor, so I do not have an electronic version, and I only have my own =
bound copy of the original. I believe that the British Library will =
print out pages from a microfilm, but obviously this would cost a good =
deal if you had the whole thing printed out.
By coincidence I have recently been talking to a publisher who is =
interested in turning the thesis into a book, and I hope that I will =
have the time during the coming year to do this, and to make it rather =
more enjoyable and better written than the thesis! At least if it is =
published it will be more accessible to local and family historians via =
libraries and bookshops.
