Steve,

Chance of hitching a ride would be very good.

I have a Frers 33 that I race on the West River on Wednesday nights. If you
pay attention to your sail trim and know what your doing (and have some
decent racing sails) this boat will routinely beat a Beneteau 36.7, J-105,
and once in a while the new C&C 99. The rating thing is a tough call.
Frers 33 is rated 114 on the bay so that puts in near the top of the PHRF
A-2 class. The PHRF B class starts at either 119 or 120. Given that would
your rather everyone owe you time or you owe everyone else time. That's a
big question. I'd say the boat sails close to it's PHRF.

I previously raced a CS 30 here and had the same problem of having a PHRF
of 150 in the B class. I wound up fighting that fight and getting 6 seconds
added to my time putting me in the C class and it's still a struggle only
now you have to be way ahead of everyone.

The boat is strong and built well. This summer we got caught in a gale on
the bay (42 knot winds and 5 to 7 foot seas) and in held up with no
problems. Mast steps have been a problem for a lot of folks and I
personally just had mine rebuilt by Osprey Marine in Herrington Harbor for
$1,800. Osprey said mine actually looked pretty good and the wood was just
slightly wet. They say the repair they made should hold up for at least 15
years. Haven't heard anything bad about blisters and there are none on my
boat so I don't think that is a big problem for the class.

The boat is big inside really big and depending on how the inside is rigged
can sleep anywhere from 6 to 8. Some have pilot berths in the main cabin
and there's one out on Yacht World at YachtWorld.com Boats and Yachts for
Sale that appears to have pilot berths port and starboard.

Like I said above, I race mine on the West River and you are welcome to come
along for a ride any time.

I'm looking for a racer/cruiser and am (possibly) interested in the Frers
33. I would race on the Chesapeake Bay and am wondering what PHRF rating
these boats have here and how do you feel they sail to the rating?

Also, how have the boats held up and what kinds of "typical" repairs have
been required -- like mast-step related problems or core/blistering issues?.

I noticed that there are a couple of these boats on the Chesapeake Bay
(Selby Bay -- very near my area -- West River) so if the owners are reading
this, what are the chances of hitching a ride?.
