Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an expert. I'm new to the Frers 33 but
I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the Ship's Store at Crowley's
Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running rigging, splicing,
shackles, etc. I'm excited about this conversation!
On the business end of things, any orders for rigging placed with me will
get free shipping and I'll price match APS, mauripro, West M*&%$&, or
otherwise.
On the fun side, I have some cool recommendations if you're interested in a
full set of halyards. For the debate on whether to strip or not to strip,
I go with a mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as it takes the most
loads (for the most part) and keep completely covered. The jib hal I keep
covered as well but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I keep the cover
at the shackle end (I splice everything, no knots) for about 2 feet that
way the cover is there for chafe whilst the kite is up. I then strip "x"
amount of cover so that the non covered part of the hal is in the mast when
fully hoisted. Of course, less cover = less weight and when aloft, can
make a big difference.
I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals, fyi. I will also strip out
the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's pretty picky and me
just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about having exposed core
to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my halyards and use some
Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the spin hals up to
the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct sunlight and will
last longer.
In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE fan of Vectran cores for main and
jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for spin hals. The little
extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin hals. In terms of what
brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. Samson Warpspeed is great but
I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly whereas Yale holds up
longer. Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and Maxibraid Plus is the
Spectra core offering from them. Of course there are vectran or
spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer (think
NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all vectran).
Well, I think I've nerded out enough for one morning! My rig is unstepped
and I can get measurements, fyi if anyone has questions. You can email me
at mma@crowleys.com or michael@gosailingchicago.com. Here is a link to
what we have online for cordage (we may have more in the physical store -
including different color offerings, etc)
http://store.crowleys.com/servlet/-strse-Rigging-cln-Lines-and-Cordage/Categories?RiggingLinesandCordage=1
Of course, I'm happy just to talk/write about this stuff just to help out -
not a sales pitch. I just love this stuff.
Cheers,
Michael

Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an expert. =A0I'm new to the Fr=
ers 33 but I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the Ship's Sto=
re at Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running riggi=
ng, splicing, shackles, etc. =A0I'm excited about this conversation!<di=
v>
<br></div><div>On the business end of things, any orders for rigging placed=
with me will get free shipping and I'll price match APS, mauripro, Wes=
t M*&%$&, or otherwise.</div><div><br></div><div>On the fun side, I=
have some cool recommendations if you're interested in a full set of h=
alyards. =A0For the debate on whether to strip or not to strip, I go with a=
mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as it takes the most loads (for th=
e most part) and keep completely covered. The jib hal I keep covered as wel=
l but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I keep the cover at the shackl=
e end (I splice everything, no knots) for about 2 feet that way the cover i=
s there for chafe whilst the kite is up. =A0I then strip "x" amou=
nt of cover so that the non covered part of the hal is in the mast when ful=
ly hoisted. =A0Of course, less cover =3D less weight and when aloft, can ma=
ke a big difference.=A0</div>
<div><br></div><div>I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals, fyi. =
=A0I will also strip out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that&=
#39;s pretty picky and me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worr=
ied about having exposed core to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I =
sky my halyards and use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined=
and send the spin hals up to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed=
to direct sunlight and will last longer.</div>
<div><br></div><div>In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE fan of Vec=
tran cores for main and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for =
spin hals. =A0The little extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin hal=
s. In terms of what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. =A0Sams=
on Warpspeed is great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly w=
hereas Yale holds up longer. =A0Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and Max=
ibraid Plus is the Spectra core offering from them. =A0Of course there are =
vectran or spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufactur=
er (think NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all vectran).=A0<=
/div>
<div><br></div><div>Well, I think I've nerded out enough for one mornin=
g! =A0My rig is unstepped and I can get measurements, fyi if anyone =A0has =
questions. =A0You can email me at <a href=3D"mailto:mma@crowleys.com">mma@c=
rowleys.com</a> or <a href=3D"mailto:michael@gosailingchicago.com">michael@=
gosailingchicago.com</a>. =A0Here is a link to what we have online for cord=
age (we may have more in the physical store - including different color off=
erings, etc)=A0<a href=3D"http://store.crowleys.com/servlet/-strse-Rigging-=

rowleys.com/servlet/-strse-Rigging-cln-Lines-and-Cordage/Categories?Rigging=
LinesandCordage=3D1</a></div>
<div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Of course, I'm happy just to talk/wr=
ite about this stuff just to help out - not a sales pitch. =A0I just love t=
his stuff.</div><div><br></div><div>Cheers,</div><div><br></div><div><br>
