Thanks Michael,

That's a great offer and an excellent outline for a Frers 33 racing =
package halyard plan.=20
=20
Do you use the topping lift as originally supplied with the boat? If so, =
any recommendations for that? We have removed ours and use the =
centerline halyard as a topping lift. It can serve as an extra halyard =
in a pinch if need be. Also, for the headsail halyards we use Tylaska =
shackles which can be opened and closed with one hand. The foredeck =
appreciates that.

Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an expert. I'm new to the Frers 33 =
but I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the Ship's Store at =
Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running rigging, =
splicing, shackles, etc. I'm excited about this conversation!
=20
On the business end of things, any orders for rigging placed with me =
will get free shipping and I'll price match APS, mauripro, West M*&%$&, =
or otherwise.
=20
On the fun side, I have some cool recommendations if you're interested =
in a full set of halyards. For the debate on whether to strip or not to =
strip, I go with a mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as it takes =
the most loads (for the most part) and keep completely covered. The jib =
hal I keep covered as well but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I =
keep the cover at the shackle end (I splice everything, no knots) for =
about 2 feet that way the cover is there for chafe whilst the kite is =
up. I then strip "x" amount of cover so that the non covered part of =
the hal is in the mast when fully hoisted. Of course, less cover =3D =
less weight and when aloft, can make a big difference.=20
=20
I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals, fyi. I will also strip =
out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's pretty picky and =
me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about having exposed =
core to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my halyards and =
use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the =
spin hals up to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct =
sunlight and will last longer.
=20
In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE fan of Vectran cores for main =
and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for spin hals. The =
little extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin hals. In terms of =
what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. Samson Warpspeed is =
great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly whereas Yale =
holds up longer. Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and Maxibraid Plus =
is the Spectra core offering from them. Of course there are vectran or =
spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer =
(think NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all vectran).=20
=20
Well, I think I've nerded out enough for one morning! My rig is =
unstepped and I can get measurements, fyi if anyone has questions. You =
can email me at mma@crowleys.comor michael@gosailingchicago.com. Here =
is a link to what we have online for cordage (we may have more in the =
physical store - including different color offerings, etc) =
http://store.crowleys.com/servlet/-strse-Rigging-cln-Lines-and-Cordage/Ca=
tegories?RiggingLinesandCordage=3D1
=20
=20
Of course, I'm happy just to talk/write about this stuff just to help =
out - not a sales pitch. I just love this stuff.
=20
Cheers,

Hi Guys,
Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets. =
There
are a lot of products out there and of course I want the lowest stretch =
at
the lowest price. Anyone have any info on what they are using and why. =
I
know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core but I =
still
believe in the high performance core with the jacket (outer core) that =
you

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class=3DMsoNormal>Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an expert. =
I'm new
to the Frers 33 but I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the =
Ship's
Store at Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running =
rigging,
splicing, shackles, etc. I'm excited about this =
conversation!<o:p></o:p></p>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
</div>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal>On the business end of things, any orders for =
rigging placed
with me will get free shipping and I'll price match APS, mauripro, West
M*&%$&, or otherwise.<o:p></o:p></p>
</div>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
</div>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal>On the fun side, I have some cool recommendations =
if you're
interested in a full set of halyards. For the debate on whether to =
strip
or not to strip, I go with a mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as =
it
takes the most loads (for the most part) and keep completely covered. =
The jib
hal I keep covered as well but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I =
keep
the cover at the shackle end (I splice everything, no knots) for about 2 =
feet
that way the cover is there for chafe whilst the kite is up. I =
then strip
"x" amount of cover so that the non covered part of the hal is =
in the
mast when fully hoisted. Of course, less cover =3D less weight and =
when
aloft, can make a big difference. <o:p></o:p></p>
</div>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
</div>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal>I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals, =
fyi. I
will also strip out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's =
pretty
picky and me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about =
having
exposed core to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my =
halyards and
use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the =
spin hals
up to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct sunlight =
and will
last longer.<o:p></o:p></p>
</div>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
</div>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal>In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE fan of =
Vectran
cores for main and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for =
spin
hals. The little extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin =
hals. In
terms of what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. Samson
Warpspeed is great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly =
whereas
Yale holds up longer. Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and =
Maxibraid
Plus is the Spectra core offering from them. Of course there are =
vectran
or spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer =
(think
NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all =
vectran). <o:p></o:p></p>
</div>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p>
</div>
<div>
<p class=3DMsoNormal>Well, I think I've nerded out enough for one =
morning!

has
questions. You can email me at <a =

Hi Guys,<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets.
There<br>
are a lot of products out there and of course I want the lowest stretch =
at<br>
the lowest price. Anyone have any info on what they are using and =
why.
I<br>
know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core but I =
still<br>
believe in the high performance core with the jacket (outer core) that =
you<br>
can end for end.<br>

Hi Guys,<br>
<br>
Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets.
There=3D<br>
are a lot of products out there and of course I want the lowest =
stretch
at=3D<br>
the lowest price. Anyone have any info on what they are =
using and
why. I=3D<br>
know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core but =
I
still=3D<br>
believe in the high performance core with the jacket (outer core) =
that
you=3D<br>
can end for end.<br>
<br>
