I haven't had any experience with the Frers but on one of my previous =
boats the strut cracked and it was built pretty much the way Frank =
describes. The only difference on my vessel was that the nuts were =
epoxied into a mound of fiberglass that was built into the hull so the =
nuts didn't move. It was the same process from the outside, remove the =
fairing and access the bolt heads. In my case you didn't access the =
nuts just removed the bolts. The individual who did the welding made a =
jig to ensure the strut didn't get deflected when he did the welding so =
the alignment of the shaft remained true, something to watch out for. =
Obviously the strut had to be removed from the hull for welding.

I had a leaking strut and I attacked it by removing the hull material =
around the strut from the out side. The vertical strut is actually a =
forged unit that is attached to the boat with four Bronze bolts and =
nuts. The hull around the strut appeared to be fiberglass and the nuts =
for the strut were on the inside hull underneath what is a support for =
the tank. The strut appears to be a four bolt assembly once you sand off =
the gelcoat, but you will find the strut has an inverted "V" which =
matches the shape of the hull where it joins the hull. I replaced all =
four nuts and bolts as some had signs of severe electrolysis
.
=20
I did not have to remove the fuel tank. I accessed the area inside the =
boat through the starboard lazarette. I'm 5'10" 230lbs and it was a =
tight fit, but it helps if you have someone helping with the tools. If =
there is a circus coming to your town, see if they have any midgets who =
might be willing to crawl in there.=20
=20
Hope this helps

Wrapped a line around shaft on weekend and area around strut now
cracked. May only be fairing but could also be worse. Is the boat
cored at strut?
=20
=3D20
=20
Also. Shaft pulled back and need work done there too. Anyone have
magic tricks to fit a person into this area to effect repairs? It
appears we have to drain and remove fuel tank at the very least. Have
been told that easiest to drain tank at the filter which is on port side
and accessed thru inspection port from quarterberth. Any good tips on
doing this and on doing this without getting diesel into boat?
