Rod:
Pachyderm had a similar problem. Unfortunately when we dropped the =
rudder, the aluminum post was badly worn at the location of the lower =
bearing. Because the entire rudder post must slide up through both =
bearings when the rudder is re-installed, there is no way to decrease =
the size of the lower bearing to reduce the slop you see at the tip. I =
researched temporary solutions which included sliding that white teflon =
material sold at hardware stores into the space, but because of the =
overall poor and wet condition of our rudder, the yard convinced me to =
let them fabricate a new one, using the old one as a guide. Sling Shot =
also needed a new rudder this season and Jack told me he ordered the new =
rudder and bearings from CCI in Canada, which would likely be the =
simplest option for you. That said, Neal Melanson talked about =
successfully reworking the rudder post and bearing surfaces in his =
listing for Vapor Trail. Perhaps he can suggest a workable option to =
repair your existing rudder.
A couple of bits of advice: Ask your yard block the boat up about a foot =
higher than normal to give you enough space to drop the rudder without =
needing to lift the boat or dig a hole in the ground under it. Also we =
discovered that the lower bearing is glassed into the hull and had to be =
chipped out and and the new one glassed in. Before you take it apart, =
take a look at your rudder stop. If it is the same as mine, its a =
bracket bolted into the underside of the cockpit sole. On Pachyderm, the =
fitting was under-built and had bent, allowing the rudder to turn past =
the stops. This caused the rudder cables to rotate over the sprocket and =
flex at the point they attach to the chain in the binnacle. We lost our =
steering at a mark rounding and Block Island Race Week last season when =
the cable fatigued and broke at the swage. I had an new rudder stop =
fitting fabricated as well when we replaced the rudder.=20
