Hi Mike:
Rod is right, the tuning guide is good on the subject. You won't be able to=
move the check-stay attachment point forward because they will get in the =
way of turning the winch handle for the primary or spinnaker winches. But y=
ou can run the tail along the deck to a cleat forward of the attachment poi=
nt and have a crew member set and release. That is how Wolverine has theirs=
. I believe Brilliant has the system of long bungees running up to blocks h=
igh on the backstay that lift the loosened runner up over the end of the bo=
om so they don't prevent easing the main. On Pachyderm we have a system tha=
t both pays out most of the way and also releases with a snap shackle on a =
three-part purchase. I have the top block of that purchase on a loop of bun=
gee cord attached to the life line so it can slide forward when we ease the=
main. That way the block doesn't drop to the deck, get twisted or go overb=
oard when we release it from the check-stay. We do try to release and clear=
it forward before rounding in heavy air. If the check-stay snags as you re=
lease it, you may end up rounding up when the main can't be eased enough on=
the bear-away.
In my opinion, the purpose of the of checks is primarily to stop the mast f=
rom pumping. If you sight up the rig upwind in a chop you will see the cent=
er moving four or five inches fore and aft. We tighten the check just enoug=
h to stop the pumping. In general a bit of mast bend is desired in strong w=
ind to flatten the main, so much more that a firm tug on the check is just =
making the main fuller. And yes we lead the check forward to the shrouds in=
light wind and flat water.
We have Harken upwind sheeting for the traveler. I strongly recommend it as=
the BEST traveler system by far.
Glad you are happy with the boat. We're enjoying ours too.
