Subject: [frers-list]LEAKS into below deck areas, etc...
Greetings Once More !
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
1-The horizontal wooden laminate along the upper cabin window areas is
delaminating due to who knows what by previous owners. The area below the
stove collects rainwater, drill a drain hole to let he water run into the
bilge. as well as beneath the engine, mine has a strainer that hook to the
ice box drain pump and a selector valve Experience with these problems would
be appreciated.
2-Should I caulk around the window exteriors and with what ? Probably
better to take the windows off and reseal them properly.
3-I removed to reweld the bow pulpit support which was broken when the boat
was acqured. Though repaired with stainless, it is showing signs of
corrosion. Suggestions ? Also, the deck brackets into which the two side
rails of the pulpit are corroded. Where do you suggest I obtain replacements
and what reattaching procedure do you recommend ?
4-The deck and topsides are now chalky. Easiest, least expensive suggested
remedy ? If they are the original gel coat they can probably be compounded
and rebuffed.
5-I have acquired a bimini and need stainless brackets to mount its two
frames. Recommended source and mounting procedure, please ? I'd also like to
acquire a dodger which will now have to attach to the existing bimini.
Recommendations for lowest cost option ?
6-Has anyone installed a chain locker in the foredeck ? My intent is
cruising, not racing, of course.
7-The rudder mounting components must be entirely redone. Is the S.African
purveyor still in business and the recommended source ? I would use
Competition Composite <http://www.fastcomposites.ca/>
http://www.fastcomposites.ca <mailto:sales@fastcomposites.ca>
sales@fastcomposites.ca in CARP, Ontario K0A 1L0 Tel.: (613) 599-6951. They
know their stuff and you will likely get good prices for your US $$$
8-Though the standing rigging is original rod, this boat has been used
virtually none in its lifetime.
Is the rod shot and if not, is there a safe inexpensive way to test it ?
There is a die test you can use but I would ask a professional to do this,
it is likely fine and if necessary replace with wire. Not being a racer, if
it is to be replaced it would be wire, unless someone tells me why not. What
size and kind of wire is recommended, please, as I plan on carrying wire
spares in cruising but would like to use the rod if sensible.
9-Is anyone using baby stays or similar, and yes or no, what is the thinking
on such, please ? Mast is equipped to take a baby stay and if you plan to
cruise offshore in heavy seas it is a good addition.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------
The boat, a Frers 33 with original factory bulb keel, is currently in dry
dock in Atlanta, not a salt water sailing environment, which is its intended
future use, if it matters in your considerations.
As always, appreciatively,
Courtney Thomas
