...without any sort of tension gauge at hand, the best practice is to
tension the shrouds so to keep the rig straight in the boat when sailing
upwind from tack to tack. Minimal tipping off at the top, and never any
bowing or bellying in the middle. Mast butt all the way aft, headstay as
loose as you dare, backstay kept to a minumum; let the boatspeed and point
tell you where to set those.
