Southern Cross has a drain at the bottom of the bilge, it=92s not at the ab=
solute lowest point, but it=92s pretty close. Not more than a cup or so of=
water can remain once it=92s pulled after haul out, and it helps dry out t=
he bilge over the winter.
During the summer the mast is pretty much the only source of leaks aside fr=
om the stuffing box. I can=92t quite figure out where it still leaks from =
as I=92ve sealed everything I can find, particularly plugging the track at =
desk level so it can=92t flow water down past the boot, yet it still can ge=
t small continuous flows running down the mast to the bilge during heavy ra=
ins. I plan to test one remaining theory in the spring=85

I have not installed a drain plug for when the boat is on the hard. This wa=
s recommended to me but this year we moved Moose inside for the winter. May=
be next year. I had a drain plug on my previous boat. It was located at the=
lowest point feasible. Do not forget to put it back before launching the b=
oat. This was forgotten one year with the previous boat when the yard ignor=
ed my written reminder and I arrived to find water an inch or two above the=
cabin sole. They had to haul the boat back out, drain it out, install the =
plug and relaunch.
While under way, if you run the bilge pump while the boat is level, for exa=
mple before you get under way, then the water level should be low enough to=
keep the water in the bilge. The source of water intrusion on Moose appear=
s to be rain. If you will be under way in the rain then additional water ma=
y accumulate. The other source is the propeller shaft and the stuffing box =
should be properly maintained, or install a dripless stuffing box which is =
what we have on Moose.
Finally, leave a terry rag in the corner on the floor and keep a bucket han=
dy in case you need it. For that purpose, and also when cleaning the bilge,=
dish gloves ease the wear and tear on your skin.
