Hi again Rowland,
Didn't mean to take so long with this--

Yes, in 1749 Evan Shelby and wife Catherine Morgan, sold at least part of
the Mountain of Wales to Andrew Blair..and then about 1765 Evan and
Catherine's son Evan Jr (wf Letitia Cox) sold a part of The Resurvey to the
Mountain of Wales, to Andrew.

Your questions have been a 'sticky wicket' for more years than I can count!

Have not been able to find any indications that Catherine Morgan came here
with any of her family.

Yes, Phillip Selby/Shelby is as far as we can document..

Andrew Blair was not the f-i-l to Evan Shelby [wf Catherine] The thought on
this by early Shelby searchers was based on the thought that Catherine was
a Davies/Davis, and therefore must be a sister to Andrew's wife. Then
because the Shelby's sold their land to Andrew, they must be related.
Then since Evan and Catherine had a son Rees with a wife Mary...Mary must
have been Andrew's daughter.. Admittedly at the time (early 1900s) it all
seemed plausible but all was question marked..somewhere along the line all
or most of the question marks got dropped and it got into print as
fact..The Shelbys apparently did not make any attempt at researching the
Blair side..

Researchers have a tendency to use Davies/Davis interchangeably, and that
makes the research harder. But to the best of my knowledge (at the moment)
I don't see a Shelby connection to Andrew's wife. No, Evan and Catherine
didn't have a daugher Catherine--that we know of...
Evan and Letitia Shelby had a daughter Catherine, but she wasn't born until
1755 and is documented.

Bottom line is... No one has been able to prove OR disprove a Shelby-Blair
marriage..Two of the stopping points-
Andrew Blair names a daughter Mary SHILVY in his will..have not been able
to prove or disprove if this was a misspelling for Shelby.
2nd...No one seems to know when Mary was born, or her birth order, but it
would have to have been after 1735, and therefore pushing her marriageable
age into the early 1760s..
+++++++
The data for Evan, his parents, and children, come (in part) from the
records found at St Caron's church, in Tregaron (now Dyfd) Cardiganshire,
Wales [have photocopies]; and currently have alot of documentation that was
not readily available to the earlier researchers.

Many original records can be found in THE SHELBY FAMILY PAPERS, Library of
Congress. These records have been microfilmed [I have them] and can be
found at the Filson Club Library in Louisville, KY and also the State
Archives in Nashville, TN- and probably other large libraries.
