Jerry, will have to get back to you on this! Have a lot of data for
Hickman and Obion counties for these Shelbys..know of, but not sure if I
have much on John B..
A major problem in sorting out these families, are records in Hickman Co
TN, being lost to courthouse fires. Another problem were the families
themselves that did not know who grandparents were.
Sam E Shelby, Jr- of Nashville, TN, 21 July 1992, wrote to me, including
his chart. Showing Priscilla as wife of Abraham, "..My family is from
Hickman Co- But have no firm data on him, other than family tradition..."
Much of the data for Abraham came from John A SHELBY, 508 Cleve St, Old
Hickory, TN, to CKS, 6 Aug 1950. John A was a son of Abraham Monroe SHELBY,
Jr & Elizabeth COLEMAN.
Other than the 1840 census, Abraham has not been found on any other census
[due to mispelled name??]
Abraham & at least some of his children appear to be closely associated
with Thomas & Hannah (POLK?) SHELBY- (Thomas' children are known] -but find
no direct ties to them.
SC/NC/TN shows we have more 'kids' than we do 'parents' There are traces in
these various states for SHELBYs- Philip; William; Abraham; Coleman; Evan;
Samuel; All in about the same age range.
The John Osborne Diary-written 1801-1802-Anson/Union Co's, NC, found by Mrs
Bonnie Pettaway-(70 pgs of single spaced, typed pages) at the NC State
Archives.[wonder who typed it & where is the original??] CKS, in Sept 1955
made excerpts from it: Mr Osborne writes, 11 Jul 1802, Sunday-"...to
Abraham Shelby's and to Thomas Shelby's" mentions Thomas's teenage
daughters, Polly and Nelly.
[Thomas liv in Meckl Co at this time]
Harold E Polk, July 1994- Acquired a [typed] copy of this diary- This was
journal #6-others have not been found.
No date given- Original diary owned by Mr Willie T Osborn, RT 2,
Mooresville, NC & microfilmed by NC Dept of Archives & History, 21 Jun 1988.
Maury Co TN Will BK's A,B,C,, D & E, 1807-1832, by Garrett & Lightfoot
(publ 1984, Southern Hist Press), pgs82-83. Abraham is one of the buyers
at sale of property of Jehosephat LADD, dec'd. Also among buyers: George,
Evan, Levi SHELBY [sons of Thomas & Hannah]; Baird(sic) [Vard?] SHELBY;
F.J. & Jeremiah ALDERSON. The property sold 16-17 Nov 1821 and was recorded
5 Feb 1824.
22 Sept 1827, Maury Co TN-Evan SHELBY of this Co on one part & "his brother
Levi SHELBY" of Co of Hardin for $40.00 three acres in Maury Co begin at
Evan's SW corner. Signed by Evan; Wit: Wm SHELBY [Evan's bro] & John
SKIPPER; Reg. 5 Oct 1829 [Deed Bk O p19 ]
1840 census Hickman Co TN-Abraham & family-110000001-000001001-who is in HH
with them? Abraham is not on 1850 census.
