Hi Robb,

Have you had any luck in your search? Martin should be on a 1900 census. I
may just be re-tracing your steps- but for what it is worth......

Martin and Anna had to live close enough to each other to meet and
'court' but haven't run across a marriage record. The Shelby's in Indiana
were thicker than sandfleas-but don't find a Martin here in 1900-or in OH
for that matter... Unless the Indexes aren't helping...

1910 census for Cincinnati, Hamilton Co, OH, taken 26 April, 17-Ward, p33:
Martin Shelby is 23, married 3 years, he and parents born in Indiana
Anna, wife, is 21, has 1 of 1 children living, she and parents born in Ohio
Earl, son, is 22 months, b OH [he's on later census this county as Earl
Martin Shelby]

Had your father been born in 1909 he would have been on this census...so a
1910 birth may be correct....
Keep in mind that in 1910 the census day was 15 April 1910 -It didn't
matter what day the census taker actually visited the family- He was
required by law to record everyone who lived in that household on the
census day

"...all the questions refer to the day when the emumeration is to
commence;...Your assistants will thereby understand that they are to insert
in their returns all the persons belonging to the family, even those who
may be deceased at the time when they take the account; and, on the other
hand, that they will not include in it, infants born after that date..."
[actual instructions given to all the U.S. Marshals]
Giving stronger credence to your father's birthdate as being July
1910...
'course not helping matters-SS # shown as born 19 July 1909- and death
record shows it as 7 July 1909. I would send for a copy of the original SS
application in order to verify...

[Keep in mind [except census] these are printed sources I'm quoting]

From ANCESTRY.com - death records for Ohio: [more data provided-just not
posting, re-privacy]
Name: Cliffor C Shelby [sic]
Date of Death: 10 June 1985
Birth Date: 07 July 1909
Social Security Number:
Marital Status: Widowed
Place of Death: , Butler County
Race: White
Birth Place: Ohio
Residence: , Butler County
Age: 75 Years

Social Security Death Index [ROOTSWEB.com] Although these are public domain
records, they are not 'attached' to families-So for privacy on this list,
I'm not going to include the SS number.
Clifford Shelby - gives birthdate as -19 Jul 1909, died June 1985

Does Indiana ring any bells? Could Martin have been a middle name that he
could have gone by? This is the only census [1910] I find Martin and Anna
on an Index I mention this, because there is a chance they could be on an
actual census, and either missed by the indexer, or the name spelled wrong.

On the 1900 census for Cincinnati is this, taken 4 June: I didn't copy all
info- [The 1900 census day was 1 June]
Elizabeth Karl, 48, widow, born WV
Minnie, dau age 27 b WV
Charles, son, 21, b WV
Anna, dau, 10, b March 1890 WV -- Keep in mind, census ages vary depending
on when it was taken and who gave the information

Could this be Anna?????? Found this on ANCESTRY.com - With this info you
could write the courthouse for this record- It may contain more data..
Death certificate #
Anna Shelby, died 14 April 1966, Reading, Hamilton Co, OH; age 78; widowed
This places her birth date as about 1888. She's not on the Social
Security Death Index files

Suggest posting queries to the various on line message boards-they are all free

You know that Hazel Shelby, born 11 Aug 1919, died Feb 1986 in Cincinnati,
and married a FIFE, was Martin's sister -right?
It will cost- but you can get a copy of her social security application -
It will name her parents-including the mother's maiden name. And may also
include where the parents were born -and other data re-family that may
provide more clues. Do the same for your father...

Hopefully this will give you a jump start...

PS - privacy issue...I have limited info given here, although all of the
above was taken from Internet sources, they are not attached to living
families..no point in making it easy for scamers :-)
Also, this mail list archives are available on line to anyone
