We haven=92t raced against the C&C 9.9 in our area. We currently rate =
108 in
New England. We won the PHRF New England Championships in 2003 against =
boats
like: Laser 28, Olson 30, Melges 24, Evelyn 32, J34, J29, X =BE Ton, =
J80, and
some S2=92s. The other Frers 33s placed 3rd, 4th, and 6th place in the =
regatta
(results are at:
http://www.phrfne.org/03series.htm).=20
=20
I typically find the rating to be pretty fair. We=92ve struggled against =
the
Melges in light air at times, but stack up against the J105s when we do =
race
them. We=92d have a pretty hard time lobbying for a change in our area. =
Any
changes would be made locally as I understand it (I know we rate 111 on =
Long
Island sound when we race down there). Good luck, and let me know if I =
can
help.

I think overall (Kurt you=92re the class President so chime in here)
considering the age of the boat, the materials currently being built =
into
newer boats (like the new C&C 9.9 which has a lot of carbon fiber =
including
the entire mast, a different keel with most of the weight down low which
allows them to stay on their feet even though they have a substantially
lower ballast to displacement ratio than the Frers 33, a water line that =
is
31 inches longer and basically a completely different bottom shape) =
would
make you want to take a hard look at adjusting the PHRF of the class. =
If
you=92re racing anything other than one design you=92re struggling. The =
C&C 9.9
has a PHRF of 102 which says it is 12 seconds a mile faster than the =
Frers
33. It=92 honestly a lot faster than that (by observation). Or the =
Frers 33
is not as fast as it used to be.
=20
My two cents worth.

A friend here on the Chesapeake who races J-29s now (PHRF 111) but who =
raced
on and against (in J-29s) Frers 33s on the great lakes, believes =
strongly
that they should be at least 120. He says he has the data to support it
which he has offered should we decide to ask for reconsideration of the =
base
rating on the Chesapeake. I=92ve been reluctant to pursue it since it =
would
affect others and could backfire given the lower base ratings elsewhere. =

I=92m on the Chesapeake Bay and our PHRF here is 114. Higher than a lot =
of
places but still 120 would be better. At 114 we are one of the slowest
boats in the PHRF =93A2=94 class which runs from about 84 to 119. At =
120 we=92d
be one of the faster boats and that class runs from 119 to 154.
