Hi Fellow Frers 33 Owners,
Some additional information from Brad Dellenbaugh, Sailing Director at New
York Yacht Club with respect to Regatta Week at Newport 2012. I am
attaching my email to him and his response. Again if you are considering
racing in the event let us know and if at all possible your preference for
how many days. If I take Equinox down I'd want to do the 4 days if
possible.
Regards
Rod
Dear Rod,
Thank you for getting in touch. We'd love to host the Frers 33 Class during
our Race Week. The dates in 2012 are July 14-22. The first weekend
overlaps with the Sail Newport Regatta and we will only be racing the
Classics, 12 Metres and 6 Metre classes. Our Around-the-Island Race is on
Wed., July 18 and is open to all competitors with no entry fee. [Note: we
are also helping Jamestown YC organize an expanded Tuesday night beer can
race on the 17th]. Race Week for both one-design and handicap classes will
run July 19-22. One-design classes can arrange to have a four-day,
three-day or two-day regatta depending on the Class needs/desires and having
the regatta be the North Americans might help attract more boats. Typically
our minimum is 8 boats for a one-design start, but we've run a start for
fewer.and since the one-design and handicap overlap, you could easily roll
into a handicap class, but also score as a one-design class within that if
you wanted.
We haven't set entry fees yet, but it varies depending on the size of the
boat/crew and the number of days. Newport is a bit expensive in July, but
there are some less expensive options. I've attached our logistics sheet
that has some details. In the past we have also blocked the Alofsin Piers
at Sail Newport for boats to stay at during Race Week and this if far less
expensive than any of the marinas.
Perhaps it might be attractive to your class members to put together a few
regattas that week with a variety of sailing and a few days off in between.
Maybe something like:
July 14-15 Sail Newport Regatta
July 17 Jamestown YC Tuesday night beer can PHRF race
July 18 NYYC Race Week - Around the Island Race
July 20-22 NYYC Race Week - Frers 33 NAs (or July 21-22 if that
worked better)
Please let us know how we can help you with promoting our Race Week to your
Class.
Best,
Brad

Subject: NYYC Race Week - One-Design Class inquiry
To the NYYC Sailing Director:
The Frers 33 class is contemplating entering a one design fleet at this
year's Race Week. How many boats are required for a one design fleet and
how many days of racing can we get in? We currently have 5 interested and
have had 8 Frers 33 on the line at our North American's in Branford/Pine
Orchard the last two years. If we made it our 2012 North American's would
that make any difference? If we don't have enough entries to make a
one-design class I assume we would race PHRF the weekend before. Can we
enter the Round the Island race as a one design and/or as a PHRF entry?
Any details you can provide would be appreciated and would help use market
the event to our members. Some, like us have a long way to travel, from
Nova Scotia for us, while others in Mass, Maine and Annapolis have a
considerable distance to travel as well so a lot of pre planning is
required. If you have any info on costs, accom., etc that would be
appreciated.
