Courtney, it is not uncommon to have problems with the spreader tips on mas=
ts that do not get unstepped ever year and serviced properly.Spreader enda =
that are taped to tightly do not breath and the salt corrosion sets in and =
when you go to disassemble the ends the tip ends either strip out or break =
the screws. the screws should be put back inwith tel-get or similiar lubric=
ant so the corrosion does not set in.On Heartbeat our Harken furler has a w=
ire instead of rod, for cruising it is fine.I can get you pic's of how Hear=
tbeats rudder is installed. We put a new rudder in Black Hawk and it weighe=
d 108lbs. There is more putty and filler in the rudder than in the original=
Carroll Marine specs.

Hope this helps

Do group members recommend any particular service to 'check out' their rod =
rigging ? I presently have
rod but am unaware of it's history, though I'm told very little use but now=
over 5 years old. The mast's
existence basically has been in storage on saw horses.
The starboard upper spreader tip has been damaged but I'm told by a local w=
elder that he can 'fix it'.
Thoughts ?
What's the consensus regarding wire, rod or kevlar ?
I should add that racing is not my objective but rather extensive coastal c=
ruising.
What mast paint has been durable and cost competitive ?
Any other suggestions and recommendations for a refurb would be appreciated=
