For everyone out there racing the Tylaska shackles also won't=C2=A0snag on =
the life lines and open as you try to raise the spinnaker.=C2=A0 That used =
to be a problem that the Tylaska shackles resolved.

Thanks Michael,
=C2=A0
That=E2=80=99s a great offer and an excellent outline for a Frers 33 racing=
package halyard plan.=20
=C2=A0
Do you use the topping lift as originally supplied with the boat? If so, an=
y recommendations for that? We have removed ours and use the centerline hal=
yard as a topping lift. It can serve as an extra halyard in a pinch if need=
be. Also, for the headsail halyards we use Tylaska shackles which can be o=
pened and closed with one hand. The foredeck appreciates that.

=C2=A0
Ok folks, here is an area where I'm an expert. =C2=A0I'm new to the Frers 3=
3 but I own a charter/lesson company and I also run the Ship's Store at Cro=
wley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an expert in running rigging, splicing,=
shackles, etc. =C2=A0I'm excited about this conversation!
=C2=A0
On the business end of things, any orders for rigging placed with me will g=
et free shipping and I'll price match APS, mauripro, West M*&%$&, or otherw=
ise.
=C2=A0
On the fun side, I have some cool recommendations if you're interested in a=
full set of halyards. =C2=A0For the debate on whether to strip or not to s=
trip, I go with a mixed bag. My main hal I beef up to 3/8 as it takes the m=
ost loads (for the most part) and keep completely covered. The jib hal I ke=
ep covered as well but still to the 5/16 size. For spin hals, I keep the co=
ver at the shackle end (I splice everything, no knots) for about 2 feet tha=
t way the cover is there for chafe whilst the kite is up. =C2=A0I then stri=
p "x" amount of cover so that the non covered part of the hal is in the mas=
t when fully hoisted. =C2=A0Of course, less cover =3D less weight and when =
aloft, can make a big difference.=C2=A0
=C2=A0
I definitely add stopper balls to my spin hals, fyi. =C2=A0I will also stri=
p out the tail of the halyard as it takes no load (that's pretty picky and =
me just being a big splice nerd). If you're worried about having exposed co=
re to the sun, wind, etc when not out racing, I sky my halyards and use som=
e Marlow Excel and use that as a messenger lined and send the spin hals up =
to the stopper balls that way no core is exposed to direct sunlight and wil=
l last longer.
=C2=A0
In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE fan of Vectran cores for main and =
jib and then switch it over to dyneema/spectra for spin hals. =C2=A0The lit=
tle extra stretch from spectra is perfect for spin hals. In terms of what b=
rand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage. =C2=A0Samson Warpspeed is great =
but I feel that the covers burn off/fray to quickly whereas Yale holds up l=
onger. =C2=A0Yale Crystalyne is the Vectran core and Maxibraid Plus is the =
Spectra core offering from them. =C2=A0Of course there are vectran or spect=
ra/dyneema cored offerings from just about every manufacturer (think NER V1=
00 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all vectran).=C2=A0
=C2=A0
Well, I think I've nerded out enough for one morning! =C2=A0My rig is unste=
pped and I can get measurements, fyi if anyone =C2=A0has questions. =C2=A0Y=
ou can email me at mma@crowleys.com or michael@gosailingchicago.com. =C2=A0=
Here is a link to what we have online for cordage (we may have more in the =
physical store - including different color offerings, etc)=C2=A0http://stor=
e.crowleys.com/servlet/-strse-Rigging-cln-Lines-and-Cordage/Categories?Rigg=
ingLinesandCordage=3D1
=C2=A0
=C2=A0
Of course, I'm happy just to talk/write about this stuff just to help out -=
not a sales pitch. =C2=A0I just love this stuff.
=C2=A0

Hi Guys,
Planning on replacing some halyards (main and jib) and genoa sheets. =C2=A0=
There
are a lot of products out there and of course I want the lowest stretch at
the lowest price. =C2=A0Anyone have any info on what they are using and why=
. =C2=A0I
know some racers use the stripped down spectra or vectran core but I still
believe in the high performance core with the jacket (outer core) that you
can end for end.

I also run the Ship's Store at Crowley's Yacht Yard in Chicago and am an ex=

<DIV>
<P class=3Dyiv1011518302MsoNormal> </DIV></DIV>
<DIV>
<P class=3Dyiv1011518302MsoNormal>On the fun side, I have some cool recomme=
ndations if you're interested in a full set of halyards. For the deba=
te on whether to strip or not to strip, I go with a mixed bag. My main hal =
I beef up to 3/8 as it takes the most loads (for the most part) and keep co=
mpletely covered. The jib hal I keep covered as well but still to the 5/16 =
size. For spin hals, I keep the cover at the shackle end (I splice everythi=
ng, no knots) for about 2 feet that way the cover is there for chafe whilst=
the kite is up. I then strip "x" amount of cover so that the non cov=
ered part of the hal is in the mast when fully hoisted. Of course, le=
ss cover =3D less weight and when aloft, can make a big difference. </=
DIV></DIV>
<DIV>
<P class=3Dyiv1011518302MsoNormal> </DIV></DIV>
<DIV>
<P class=3Dyiv1011518302MsoNormal>I definitely add stopper balls to my spin=
hals, fyi. I will also strip out the tail of the halyard as it takes=
no load (that's pretty picky and me just being a big splice nerd). If you'=
re worried about having exposed core to the sun, wind, etc when not out rac=
ing, I sky my halyards and use some Marlow Excel and use that as a messenge=
r lined and send the spin hals up to the stopper balls that way no core is =
exposed to direct sunlight and will last longer.</DIV></DIV>
<DIV>
<P class=3Dyiv1011518302MsoNormal> </DIV></DIV>
<DIV>
<P class=3Dyiv1011518302MsoNormal>In terms of what core to use, I'm a HUGE =
fan of Vectran cores for main and jib and then switch it over to dyneema/sp=
ectra for spin hals. The little extra stretch from spectra is perfect=
for spin hals. In terms of what brand/style, I'm a big fan of Yale Cordage=
. Samson Warpspeed is great but I feel that the covers burn off/fray =
to quickly whereas Yale holds up longer. Yale Crystalyne is the Vectr=
an core and Maxibraid Plus is the Spectra core offering from them. Of=
course there are vectran or spectra/dyneema cored offerings from just abou=
t every manufacturer (think NER V100 - on tons of J105's for halyards - all=
vectran). </DIV></DIV>
